I tend to watch and read as many reviews as I can to gauge the pros and cons. Not all websites or reviewers talk about the same things so I like to build up an impression after my initial first impressions spring to mind when I see a picture of a watch posted online that I like the look of. Is it a case of “I saw it, I liked it, I bought it” ? Is there rational behind the decision ?
I’m toying with the idea of a Breitling Superocean 2 for my 30th purely on the looks.
I'll then mullet over for weeks/months sometimes before actually buying lol.
There are exceptions though, the ultra-rare Casio Cognit Schema I have was bought within minutes as I had to have something that probably less than 10 people still have out there. And this new Hamilton I bought after just a single night when I saw it mentioned by a mate.
Sometimes gut feelings just trump everything else.
I've bought very expensive watches before on a whim and liked them for a year or two then sold them. NOMOS, Tudor etc. These days I don't really see the appeal on mid 4 figure watches personally. A Grand Seiko Spring Drive is the only one I really want but no rush for one I guess.

I think so too! There are a couple of watches in my box that I know I will never shift on after a year or two and I'm bored. This is definitely one of them!Well, it’s often a combination of factors:

I've always tended to go for stuff which appealed to me aesthetically primarily. Something I love may be hated by others, and vice versa. I tend not to specialise in one particular manufacturer but do tend to have a lot more of a couple of makes than others.BFG_1992 said:

Usually something like but not without an awful amount of research regarding both the watch and the seller. I usually make a choice of model and then start researching and looking/hunting. This can take a long time dependant on what I'm after...

If you like it and can afford it, then why not? If you spend £XX on a watch then that's not the amount you'll lose on it even if you change your mind at a later date. It's always going to be worth a good percentage of what you paid for it, sometimes even more, obviously providing it's legitimate. I can't help with the model you want, never had one and no knowledge of them. No idea why really, just that something else always seems to pop up first.

I really liked the look of a Seamaster PO and saw it came in a large size.Is it a case of “I saw it, I liked it, I bought it” ? Is there rational behind the decision ?
I wennt out to try it in person and then went to get the best deal I could find.
For the Starbucks I just put my name down with the AD and waited - hadn't see it other than online.
Have name down for Blue Skydweller as well - saw it online and read about it - fell in love.
Not happening any time soon and that's a good thing as I don't want to have to explain to 'er indoors ....
Currently looking at getting a GS 60th anniversary - it's the looks on this one and the notion that it is 'slightly' under the radar.
So, primarily looks... simples.

The first ‘proper’ watch I bought I was 23 and low balled a guy for a Planet Ocean on a forum I used at the time. He accepted. Like you, I didn’t really think about it beyond the looks, although I had some awareness of Omega as a brand I had no idea what a co-axial movement was for example.
It was actually my dad who said ‘well why don’t you buy it’ when I showed it to him because I liked it. I love that watch and I barely took it off for years.
Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with a high quality dive watch. It’s a great start and then subsequent choices can be influenced by that - in terms of big purchases I bought a chrono (speedy) and a GMT (PO GMT) as they did different things to my original PO - the GMT particularly is just hugely practical.

I don't collect watches, but do have an interest in them. My approach is more like clothes, shoes etc.Is it a case of “I saw it, I liked it, I bought it” ? Is there rational behind the decision ?

For each, there is a balance of function and form depending on what I expect to be doing and wearing when I have it on. I buy watches to fill a perceived gap, so I have options. Of course that means that I have to like them.
Like the aforementioned clothes etc. recent events have meant that they are not getting used anywhere as they were. I recently resolved (Partially inspired by this thread) that, in the New year I am going to change that.

Surely the answer is to follow your heart. You need to go with an innovative, imaginative, exclusive watch that challenges perceptions and dominates the boardroom. A watch equally at home under the sea or under a cuff. A piece to get you noticed, that says "Ladies, I've arrived". An heirloom, an investment, something that's worth all the schmoozing.
Plain black ROLEX. Post pictures every week. Discuss different lug angles ad nauseam. Job done.
