So to the absolute newbies here... how difficult / easy is it to start modding / building?

Where best to source parts?

What basic tools are required?

Would love to give it ago....

My suggestion would be to join
The watch forum uk site.
Lurk and learn.
Very friendly and a wealth of information.
Expect to completely ruin a few watches when you start !
Bring credit cards.
Stay up all night.
Buy from top guys in Jungle Villages (really)!
After a few years its just easy.

Sounds simple!

I'll jump straight in and build one from scratch!

One thing I can't see though - where do you source dials from - for example ones with Seiko branding on, is it a case of buying old watches and 'liberating' them or do people offer 'new' Seiko dials as spares or similar?

There are sites!
Yobokies for instance in Hong Kong.
You dream of something, he already stocks it !
A whole business selling Sieko parts no website but can be found.
All will be revealed on the Watch Forum.

Well its finished.

What a nightmare this was.

It started out as a knock off AP, i've then modified a 7002 chapter ring, dial sourced from WR Watches, hands sourced from raffles time. The NH36 sits in a custom movement spacer I hacked together out of spares.

To bump my post above, please see the gen 2 version:

The case is from here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001444873469.h...

This is a sterile case, and features no knock off AP branding!

I've designed and produced a custom movement spacer so that this case can house an NH36, that opens up a whole world of Seiko modding.

I'm still waiting on some different chapter rings to turn up, but for now i'm still using the modded 7002 ring.

Thanks. I like a strong lume but I also like the styling of what you've made.

To be honest, I'm not sure about the lumed bezel on my skx mod. It looks cool and all that, but it's very distracting to the eye and makes the watch dial and hands a little bit more difficult to read at night. It stands out too much. I'm not sure I would go for that again.
