They're rated to 30m, so swimming is not something you should be doing whilst wearing one.
I think if you’re regularly diving below 30m your choice of watch won’t be a plastic Swatch. I rarely dip below 2…

30m means you can shower with it.

Nah. They’re tested against ISO 22810 - a standard which is meant to show that if a watch has 30m or water resistance it is suitable for all aquatic activities down to 30m.

I’d go out on a limb and say most watches used during swimming now are Apple Watches or other smart watches, many of which have 30m of water resistance.

nah, 30m means rain and showering as per the ISO.

I just looked it up and they are indeed only rated at 3 bar (30m).
Apparently all Swatches are….
I have been using Swatch watches in the swimming pool since I was a little boy. This never happened to me tough.

BTW, I was only in the toddler bassin with the little one. So no more exposure to water than in a shower and no swimming involved.
Anyhow, I will report back in a couple of weeks how a real MoonSwatch keeps up to some water action! wink

That isn’t in the ISO.

Just opened the back of the watch so the moisture escape.

Oh, they used a correct Swiss Made Renata battery!

scratchchin but the battery doesn‘t pop out easily… almost as if it was glued on ….

roflroflrofl

The Renata “battery“ is just a thin metal disc, while the real battery sits in a different place.

I need to take away the back and have a closer look!

Comes away almost by itself laugh
Behold the magic of the Sumon PE50 calibre with no (0) jewels!

The real one has a calibre with 4 jewels. By contrast, this is a Swatch I have for almost 30 years (one I went swimming before wink )

It is simply ‘water resistant‘ and has 22 jewels!

Indeed the original (or mine at least) does have a Renata.

Still havent worn my Mars at all (bought December), I took the battery out months ago to stop any risk of damage for leakage etc. while its just stored in its box. I really should decide what im going to do with it!

And the idea that it only means ‘showerproof’ is an internet fallacy. People on here towards the beginning were adamant, but if you look up ISO22810, it’s pretty rigorous. Needless to say, I’ve worn my Moonswatch whilst swimming and in the shower and had no issues at all.

Slightly O/T but as we've mentioned them and there is expertise here, what is the purpose of jewels in a watch? Are they actual diamondy-preciousy-jewels?

My understanding as they function almost as bearings or as a lubricant would to mean metal on metal doesn’t wear/destroy itself and or create friction in the movement.

I believe basically this. Ruby (Corundum) is 9 on the Mohrs scale and as such has excellent resistance to wear.

Ruby bearings will therefore not wear out/provide excellent stability in the movement. Watch bearings are of course still lubricated though, and as they age the lubrication breaks down.

Congratulations Teatowel! Mercury is a great watch!

Happy to report the condensation in my fake Neptune has gone and is running biggrin

ETA, I didn‘t refit the cheap metal spacer. I don‘t think it is needed to keep the movement in place but is rather there to give the watch some additional weight i.e. substance.
The crude cutout for the battery is absolutely nonsensical.
Feels even lighter now, which suits a fake, blue plastic Speedmaster very well indeed laugh

Just leave the battery in and keep it going. Swatch will replace a dead battery free of charge.

Yeah I know - I’ve had batteries leak in a couple of GShocks that have been left unworn and destroy the battery touch points writing the watches off so didn’t want to risk this (albeit rare possibility) knowing that I didn’t even know if was going to wear it

Where did you get it from?
Must admit the Mercury is the only one I could see myself wearing longer term once the gimmick of various coloured versions has worn off.

Half a dozen queuing outside the Edinburgh store just now. Assuming they have stock on the off-chance any locals or visitors are looking for one.
