I believe list is sub-5k. Or was (and a good bit under).

Geneve is spot on: people want a Daytona because they think they can' t get one.

you can get Daytonas in s/s for list even here.

I am very keen on watches and on rolex. frankly i was hooked on the idea of a Daytona until... i saw one in the flesh!

I had actually not realised how shiny they were!

My colleague in the office has one and i find it ugly!

There is so much polished steel on it.

I ended up buying the explorer II black face as it had the same shape but it is all in brushed steel which is much more my idea of what a rolex should be: understated.

Paul Newman' s Daytona was spot on, but years after years they destroyed the original good looks. They are too flashy nowadays.... shame.

UK list for Rolex Daytona (116520) is £4420, the watch featured on the link is £5350 and it is 3 years old.....

I've heard of someone who got a white-face SS Daytona from a London AD after a year's wait. Personally, I wouldn't wait a week for one, but ...

what with the current trend on bling and large watches i am not so sure a daytona counts as flashy...people do want 1 because they are hard to come by...in a way by having 1 you are saying you can get 1 when not everybody can...reason is just very tight supply...for this kind of money i prefer a yachtmaster with platinum bezel....
p.s.got mine from geneva airport duty free...took 3 years...

Another classic PH sweeping generalisation.

It's like saying all people who buy Porsche's have small c0cks rolleyes

Personally I wanted a Daytona before I even knew they were rare.

But thanks for your insite
What's the problem?

All he has said is he wanted one untill he saw one and didn't like it. I think many people who like watches and even Rolex don't like the Daytona. It's hardly universally thought of as being a beautiful watch. If it was made by someone else it wouldn't be nearly as popular.

You can't argue that much of the demand is due to the scarcity of the watch in shops.

Swerni,

That was a bit of an aggressive post from your end...

Anyway, if you worked in an investment bank and on a trading desk, trust me, you' d see where i am coming from...

I totally respect the fact that some people genuinely love the daytonas for their design, their history and their intrisic qualities... but they are the smaller proportion of those who buy them.

In London' s trading desks, having a Daytona is like being made VP. It is like a logical evolution. It is a rare watch, and how is it that 4-5 guys seating next to one another all have the same watch??

Are they all watch anthusiasts? Are they all rolex buffs? Are they all passionate by the precision of the movement?
No, no and no!

A s/s daytona is in most cases a status symbol worn by non-enthusiasts.

The judgement i gave afterwards on the watch was purely personal. I love rolex along with other watches, and really loved the idea of a daytona.
As i said, Paul Newman' s era watches were understated, elegant, and already had the high technical degree that made these watches.
When i looked more closely at buying a modern version of those, i was thoroughly disapointed. I could not like then. Mostly because of the amount of bright steel (instead of polished steel) on the watch.

I will be the one with the Daytona wink
Someone on here (tertius I think) wisely said that living in London gives watch enthusiasts a skewered view on what's rare or not. Although you see lots of them in city bars they are still hard to find 'in the provinces'.

I was in Barbados the other day and was looking for a Daytona to sell back in the U.K. In the dealership in Bridgetown I saw two people wearing them and when I was sitting having a drink afterwards I saw at least four in one cafe. All the people wearing them were well heeled cruise ship types who clearly had a few dollars to spend ashore.

Although I am embarrassed to admit it, part of what puts me off the Daytona is the fact that so many people want them just as an obvious status symbol.

what's all this 2 year waiting lists for a SS Daytona? I thought it was more like 7 years? I've never heard anyone say there's a 2 year waiting list in any Jewellers?

Also, in Dubai - I asked the rolex store in the Mall of Emirates, and they said 5 years minimum for a SS Daytona.

To the chap that said he prefers a Yatch Master with plat dial over the Daytona, I'll swap you my hardly worn Yatch master for a SS Daytona with black dial if you've got one!

Waiting lists for Daytonas depend on how many are on the list at a given AD ! Sometimes the Dealer will give you a good idea on how many are on the list and how many he would receive in a year if you talk to him nicely! Also On the odd occasion customers dont follow through and they can go to the next on the list ! But normally given there is a premium on the list price they normally get sold elsewhere;-)
Normally the deposit is £500 and paid on application for order.
The Daytona for some reason is sought after and is impossible to get at List from a shop window.
I would say IMHO the best list to join is one at an Airport as they dont normally adopt too many lsts as most customers are just passing through and not Locals!!
Worst thing about a daytona is it doesnt have a date , even funnier when the watch used to run with a Zenith "El Primero" movement and the date function was removed!!
Now its uses Rolex`s own movement , still no date.
Also there is rumour that the Daytona in Steel will be discontinued or radically changed so that has helped to strengthen the market .
Evidence of this is the A-series 2000 Daytona Zenith Movement , and black ringed sub dials now highly sought after and commanding a price of around £8k!!
Just my .02 Cents!!

Managed to get onto 1 list but i'm being told 7-10 years and ideally I want one in just over 2years time, no deposit which worries me! Phoned mappin and webb and waiting for them to come back and see what they have to say, i'm also in Geneve airport in a few weeks so will do some digging but would much prefer to find a UK jeweller, place a deposit and not get messed about and have faith that they will deliver.

Can anyone point me in more of a direction or have any insight to help me?

I was in Geneva last week and went to the Motorshow - totally missed the Rolex dealer . My 'pal' traveling with me bought his Yatchmaster last month at substantial discount (25%) in St Kitts - all the Carribean Islands quoted the same price. I'll just stick to my GMT II Ceramic dial. For the time being anyway!
