Right chaps,

I am looking at a new purchase and the 2 options are a carrera, brown face or a breitling super ocean chrono with leather strap. Other suggestions welcome around the same price!! both look very nice on but am a bit fearfull of tag's chav reputation. i already have a seamaster and not a rolex fan.

cheers Rick

Personally neither floats my boat.

In order to suggest alternatives what sort of money are we talking?

Oh, and I assume its the Carrera chrono - so you are looking for a chrono?

Hi tertius, yeah both chrono's so looking for a chrono, like the speedy also and had a older one but sold and moving on, although miss it. the breitling looks very bling with ss bracelet but black face with black leather looks nice as does brown carrera on brown strap. both watches are around the same price here (in dubai) around 1700 gbp no discount for tag!!! can get cheaper online but i want to buy from dealer. checked out a few iwc also and like the portuguese, bit more pricey but vey nice.

cheers Rick

If you can run to the IWC then get it.... MUCH more special than any of the other contenders you've mentioned....

+1.

I'm not impartial, as I am the very proud owner of a Portuguesier, but I agree entirely with Cyberface that they're a cut above the Tag or the Breitling. IMHO, if you can afford the extra, it'd be worth stretching the budget.

Either way, look forward to seeing photos of your new purchase on the Wristcheck thread!

Go fo the standard Tag Chrono - far more discreet than the tachy (tacky - hehe whatever) - I have one and while not the most exclusive in the collection, still something I wear knowing that I love it to bits.

From the two I would go for the Tag it has the classic flieger look.

My personal choice would be a bit different, if I were looking for another chrono I would probably go for something along the lines of a Sinn 756/757 one of the tegimented chronographs (see www.chronomaster.co.uk for a description of the 'tegiment' steel hardening) as I'm haven't been too happy with steel watches becoming scuffed and generally looking tired after sustained use. My old Breitling (even though I didn't wear it that frequently) gathered hairlines all over it due to the highly polished nature of the steel (yes, it was blingy hehe).

The tegimented Sinn watches do look a lot more utilitarian than most. Just depends of what kind of style you like. The one draw back to the Sinn chrono is the lack of a continous seconds hand.

The Glycine watches have some very nice 24 hr designs, my local dealer is an AD and some of them do feel very comfortable and very unique on the wrist. I've no idea how long it would take to get used to the 24 hr dial though.

OK, well I'm reading the requirements as for a slightly dressy chronograph as opposed to a more traditional sports chrono.

Accordingly I don't think Sinn fits the bill, being too utilitarian and tool-ish.

I do think the IWC Portuguese is a good suggestion, the chrono-automatic is almost within budget.

SOme alternative suggestions:

Well within budget Oris Artelier:

http://www.oris.ch/collections/collections_detail....

(can't find a good pic I can link directly to)

And I like unusual watches so some left field options ...

Joerg Shauer Kulisse Edition 12 (perhaps within budget ...):

Or the edition 14 if the big writing on the 12 is a bit much (I concede it may be)

Jacques Etoile Imola Bi-Compax (a classic style maybe in budget, with luck ...):

Meistersinger monograph:

If used is an option, then I would be looking at Girard-Perregaux (e.g. this was well within your budget) or Jean Richard or Zenith (e.g. this) or (if very patient) then the Union Glashutte Chrono is rather lovely:

Finally - buy what you like!

One or 2 really nice pre-owned watches, that way you'll not loose a load of money in depreciation.
