A colleague who posts here regularly assures me that you enjoy a challenge, and that you won't turn your nose at the paltry budget i have been set. Short version, for xmas the significant other wants to buy me a new watch at not having much cash between us £140 is the max. I'm open to any suggestions!

or take a look on the TZ-UK forum if you like something perhaps better & don't mind pre-owned.

As I put you up to posting, I suppose I better respond.

For that budget it's only a matter of time before someone suggests a Seiko Monster. I've got one. It's great thumbup

What sort of style are you after?

Seiko divers are nice, and if that's you thing you'll have to go a long way to find anything nicer for the price.

For other possibilities you could do worse than take a look at the RLT watches site, one or two of Roy's own RLT branded creations ( here are within a tenner of your budget as are some of the military style Ollech & Wajs ( here and here).

I've got examples of both (an RLT4 like this and an O&W M6 divers watch), both of them punch well above their weight (or rather price) in terms of quality. The RLT watches in particular are made in tiny numbers to individual requirements (my RLT4 is numbered 13 of 50), and Roy's generally happy to customise by mix'n'matching dials, bezels, straps etc where practical to give you something pretty much unique.

A friend showed me the Seiko 5 divers watch he bought through Amazon last week for £129. It looks really good, amazing value, makes me want one as well. I'll try and find which one it was since when I search for SEIKO and DIVERS in Amazon it doesn't show it.

I should bloody hope so - you pecked my head enough to do it!

Style wise i am open to suggestions, although just looking at that werners flying watches link, i do like that so anything in a similar style perhaps.

Either a SKX007 (or 009) Big Dive with a Jubilee or an Oyster type bracelet, or maybe a Monster, if thats your thing. If you buy well you could get two Big Dives for that money.

Personally Id prefer a nice Omega Dynamic for that money.....

What does Seiko 5 mean? I have one from the '80s.

'5' refers to being an automatic mechanical watch (1); day display (2); date display (3); water proof (4) and finally: shock proof (5).

The 5 range covers all sorts - I'm very happy with my military style 5 which cost a whole 25 quid. For an auto that keeps good time they're ludicrously good value. It's smaller than a monster too which is better on my weedy wrists!

Ah. Well, mine's still working fine after all these years. Couple of scratches on the glass but that's all.

Have to agree, that the Seiko 5's are incredible value for money and if you lay your hands on some of the more unusual pieces, keep them.

Also, Rotary have just launched their verison of the Breitling Navitimer and a friend of mine on TZ-UK went and got one and said for the money (£70)it is a lot of watch.

Yeah, a Monster will do well. Looks considerably more expensive than it is, and that bracelet is better than anything this side of an Omega.

i would agree that a seiko would be a good choice. My ex got me a seiko titanium chronograph for my birthday that i love. rock solid watch with a very good look (in my opinion). from memory it was only just over your budget so you may be able to find it within that budget now.

edit: I have just looked on ebay, and you can now get it for £100! crikey that is good value considering there are highstreet shops still asking over £200 for it.

Thinking back to when I was a schoolboy, I recall one of my father's colleagues telling me he'd tried all manner of marques (inc Rolex) and that he found Seiko was the most robust.
