Evening watch lovers. wavey

I've recently decided to get my fat arris off the sofa more often and participate in some sports, namely squash and mountain biking, and early next year will be looking to rekindle my love of snowboarding.

So, my current watches are unsuitable and far too pricey, thus I need a decent cheaper watch that will not fall to pieces straight away.

The obvious choice (for me at least) is a Casio G-shock, had one before and it was very sturdy, but a little unsightly. If they're the best on offer I'll have one, but I'm curious to see what else there is.

Don't mind what the strap is made of, though I quite like the Nato style strap I think they're called, which I first spotted on here recently. Seen a couple of these self proclaimed special forces watches (which I'm sure they're not really), are any of them any good?

To summarise I want a tough as old boots watch that doesn't cost the earth, doesn't mind getting wet or taking the odd knock, and doesn't look like it belongs in the kids department. Doesn't need lots of features, telling the time and date would be enough I should think, anything else being a bonus.

No budget really, but 'cheap and cheerful' would be preferable to 'a bit more expensive but worth it' though I'm open to any suggestion.

So, enough wittering, any suggestions?

Asked this not so long ago. Seiko 5s and related divers watches are supposed to be the toughest if you want good looking. That said, you could try this:

They look like you could be done for carrying a dangerous weapon. thumbup

i got a mudman recently for exactly the same reason. wanted something rugged, light and cheap, that i could use for exercising and also wearing around the farm. for £33 posted from ebay - i have to say it's an absolute bargain. was brand new too.

i didn't need the options some of the other models in the range offer, so the mudman was perfect for me.

Cheers guys!

Darren, WTF is that?! I like those Werners watches actually, that one looks one 'click!' away from transporting it's wearer into the future hehe

Good to know the Mudman is still a well rated piece of kit, had one before and loved it. The G-Shocks were the first thing that sprang to mind when I decided I need a new watch smile

It's a protective cage on the front similar in style to the cages on the masks of really old diving suits. You know, the ones where they have an air tube down to the diver.

It'll be like SXOC reunited if it is hehe

I'll pass thanks mark, as nice and bargain-tastic it is I can see me knackering the bracelet repeatedly, was thinking more along the lines of a soft strap, and Messr Ninja seems keen, cheeky sod going for the interception biggrin

Thanks, Mark! beer

Took about an hour to figure out how to remove links and then adjust to suit. I think everything's secure but I'll find out in due course.

This is definitely a watch you can whack someone over the head with and know what time you knocked them out. evil

PS 45mm doesn't look bad on skinny wrists. Need to choose one of the following options:
1) wk a lot with your left hand hehe
2) wear loose, long sleeve tops rolleyes
3) climb overhangs a lot to build up forearm muscles thumbup

You can't go wrong with a G Shock, I've exposed one to depths in excess of 200m for sustained periods (as in 6 weeks underwater not just under pressure) and it's decompressed at speeds that would kill a human, non of this noncy poncy helium release valve rubbish just hard core diving and the watch didn't miss a beat. It's a shame really because it simply re inforced the belief that the finest diving watches offered from the likes of Rolex, Omega etc really are OTT financially.
