I thought this watch could only be classed as a "Hommage" if it had Panerai's blessing?

Correct me if I am wrong - I thought Panerai had patents / copyright on their watch designs, unique crown guard etc?

I bet Panerai are not best pleased hehe

Your wasting your time on here Dai, you will just get flamed - strange cos you don't on any of the proper watch forums.

Here is my Ray Knight - how anyone in the right mind could possibly think this is a real pan is beyond me, but this lot seemed to get the goat when I posted mine.

Enjoy it with the pleasure of knowing it is a real limited edition of 'one'

It's funny how you suggest this isn't a 'proper' watch forum when others here disagree with you.

Anyway, you're not actually correct about this mythical support for copy watches. look at timezone or tz-uk.com the opinions on 'hommages' are at best split. I've seen plenty of threads on these Panerai Hommages with exactly the same views from those forums as you read here.

Sure your watch has different colours to a genuine Panerai but every thing else is exactly the same.

It has an exact copy Panerai case.
Copy Panerai numbers
Copy Panerai hands
The sub dial is exactly the same as a genuine Panerai.

You may have changed the colours a bit but it's obviously still an exact copy of a Panerai. Surely you got it because you like the genuine Panerai watches?

How can you possibly think a watch that has the exact same distinctive case and crown guard, numbers, hands etc as a real Panerai will not look like a real one.

I don't have an issue with 'hommages' as long as they have some kind of twist. The one above is great, it looks like a panerai but its pretty obvious it isnt. I really want an original pan at the moment, but I see no issue with a hommage if people just want a watch that looks like one.

Passing one off as a genuine is a different issue as are replica's as there sole aim has to be to look like an original.

These Panerai hommages sole aim is to look like an original, otherwise they wouldn't use exact copies of all the case and all the parts.

They don't - most people in their right mind think it's a fake.

I do agree with you about copies, but whilst this uses the same type of components it is pretty obvious it isnt an original! If the design had been a straight copy then that is a different issue.

I would have though the biggest clue to it not being a proper watch forum was in the name of the website www.pistonheads.com
as opposed to www.TIMEzone.com,www.WATCHuseek,www.PoormansWATCHforum.com,www.TZ-UK.com etc etc where they have subsections covering other things than watches including cars.

In the end I stick by these general rule.
Fake - meant to fool the purchaser & Others
Replica - meant to fool others
Homage - meant to fool no one (possibly the odd person with a tiny bit of knowledge but not enough to know the give away signs would get fooled)

According to your logic, doesn't the fact that you don't own a "Proper" watch make Pistonheads the more valid forum for you?

I currently own a Girard Perregaux Laureato Evo 3, Titanium Oris TT1 full lume, a Boschett Cave Dweller incoming, and the Ray Knight. Retail Price range from £230 to £8700. Incidently the Ray Knight is actually my most accurate watch at approx +4secs per day.

Nice for you to quote the retail price range. What a hero laugh

Have copy Panerai owners started calling them by the name of the bloke who makes them now. hehe

I suppose calling it a "Ray Knight" makes it sound better doesn't it?

He has never sold on ebay - he used to make them to order for members of a certain watch forum but no longer makes them at all as he concentrates on his own brand watch manufacturing business.

Edited for appalling English!

Cheers

I call it a Ray Knight because that's who made it. Hopefully that meets with your approval.

Ray Knight to distinguish it from a JOA and a Davidsen. All three do/did bespoke custom orders.

Ray Knight did several levels of trim the most expensive version was close to $2k if you went for painted dial, Ceramic PVD, and decorated SOPROD. Mine came in at $800.

Surely the differences are that nobody is attempting to pass off a watch like that as a Panerai, it doesn't say Panerai on it and that anyone who has seen a Panerai knows that it isn't one?

Although I wouldn't buy one, it's certainly a long way from the usual Chinese Submariner.
