Call me a victim of marketing or fashion or whatever, but there is no way I would have a Seiko over an Omega of any sort, battery, wind up, solar powered, whatever.

It probably sounds silly, but in my mind Seiko is just a bit too close to Casio and reminds me of those cheap plastic LED watches I thought were all the rage when I was 10 years old.

As you can guess I am no expert or collector, if the watch looks good and feels good (quality etc) then I like it, but if I can have the "better" brand at the same price then thats the way I go.

Think of it as Skoda vs VW very similar car, but available at the same money, which would you choose?.

What he said!

Seiko are excellent watches, terrific value for money and worth owning. I type this with my left hand slowed down by having to move the mahoosive weight of a Seiko Orange Monster, which is not the only Seiko that I own.

They are definitely several cuts above Casio watches, but at the same time, they are not as special as the Omegas and Loneginesesesesesese that have been mentioned on this thread.

In the same vein, a purely mechanical automatic watch is a lot more special than a quartz movement watch.

To the OP, if your dad is an Omega fan, then an Omega on your wrist will always remind you of him. Without being mercenary about it, you may find that your dad is prepared to stretch the budget for a really special watch...especially if it's an Omega.

Yes, that is being a victim of form over function. An upmarket Seiko, every last bit of it made in-house, is far superior to an Omega at the same price. The Marine Monster is a watch that is designed to be used, one that will, if so desired, last a lifetime. I understand though, why people are swayed towards "upmarket" brands. It's like in my day manufacturers gave me an umbrella to promote their brand. Now you pay a fortune to have their name on it. Paying dear to advertise their product? That's life I guess.

Let's be completely honest here: If all that mattered was timekeeping we'd all be wearing ghastly black plastic digital watches which keep spectacularly accurate time, cost peanuts and do not stir the soul one iota.

Even a Seiko is an indulgence.

If the budget is there to indulge a bit more, then do so and enjoy.

What the OP should not do is to settle for less than what he really wants (subject to available budget). This is a special occasion watch. Every time the OP looks at his watch he should feel a bit special. He should not think "You know, I really should have gone for the Omega/Longines/Whatever."

He should also not think "Well, that was an enormous waste of money!"

A lucky position to be in,

If it were me I would be trying hard to get a Speedmaster Pro 2nd hand, a classic watch that will never date

Although if you wanted new, what about the railmaster, this is also very nice and I suspect could be had within budget with a bit of haggling (just)

Here is my 2p worth. Seen Sinn mentioned - can recommend that. If you want used then Breitling is an option - Andrew Michael in Newark had a 2005 B-1 for £1200 the other week.

But if you want something a little different have a look at this -

Very well made, proven movement and the lume is a very cool blue.

A really tough choice!

If I was fortunate enough to be in this position I would be tempted to go down the used route for the Omega (must be Auto though) as a watch to treasure and wear on special occasions using £1100 of your maximum budget. Might be nice idea to find a vintage model from your birth year perhaps to add a bit more sentimentality.

AND

get a Seiko (Monster for example)for about £150 that you can wear on day to day basis that will take anything you can throw at it.

So there you have it. You can have your cake and eat it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Interesting watches. I like them. Who makes their movements?

I think you should get something your dad wants to give you (and you want, of course). I love teh idea of going to London and celebrating with a pint/lunch afterwards. A real memorable occasion.

Talking of second hand watches, a watch made in 1988 would be a very cool gift for a 21 year old. (e.g. http://www.vintagewatchcompany.com/)

There are a few shops around Bond Street/Burlington Arcade etc which sell brand new and second hand watches. Call around some and say you are interested in x coming on x day and they ought to be prepared to do business with you.
