I want a cheapie watch I can use for Le Mans without taking my beloved Speedmaster Professional.

I know Werners gets good reviews on here but wondered what the consensus on this is;

Is it trying too hard to be a Submariner, or is it ideal for what I want as a cheapie which if it gets destroyed I'll not be distraught about?

I think it's obvious what is going on there but if you like it, why not?

Personally, I'd say a little too try-hard. Ironically, if it were a better copy, sorry hommage, I'd probably like it more. But the crown & bezel really grate. Doesnt look so bad in Black, though:

Christ Mark, I know Le Mans can be a bit rough, but it's not that bad.

If you want a robust, inexpensive beater for general use, my default suggestion is get a Seiko SKX009 or similar.

Sort of depends whether you care or not. Werners have plenty of watches around that price which may be pretty unoriginal but aren't so obviously apeing a style icon/cliche. If cool matters, then this certainly isn't it, unless you're into seriously ironic design statements to people who can read them. You would be better off with a who-gives-a-damn-if-it-tells-the-time Casio.

If you're bothered about losing it, just put it on a NATO - otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Exactly my thoughts - stick it on a NATO, and buy the black one.

Alternatively get an EMAs from www.timepieces.co.uk already on one. I'm either going to wear that or my indestructible Sinn to Le Mans for much the same reason as you - just don't want to risk doing something to my Speedie whilst riding the beer scooter.

Neil Armstrong wore his Speedmaster to the moon and back.

You're worrying about yours on a weekend watching motor racing?

You big girl!

But he just bounced around a bit in slow motion.

In fairness Armstrong probably didn't consume as many stubbies of cheap french beverage

He probably meant a showering of beer.

Why would you spend ninety quid on a watch for the weekend?

If it's simply because you don't want to damage your speedie why not just go to Elizabeth Duke and buy an Avia Sub-a-like?

Diversion, if you'll permit; Mark, at BTAP you were sporting the Speedie but said that it would be yours if you could sell that Boxster. Does the fact that you own it mean that you did? If so then I doff my cap in your general direction!

You mean the real thing isn't either beer or shower proof? He daren't risk his beloved watch in French water? Jesus, get a Seiko and live man! I always thought Omega sold on ability and strength, not girly promises which don't follow through. But then, Le Mans is harder to take than the moon I guess.

Rumour has it that Armstrong et al. were offered the chance to see Ickx/Oliver take victory in '69 but cried off because they didn't want to get dust in their chrono pusher buttons. The big girls.
