But then, Le Mans is harder to take than the moon I guess.
Rumour has it that Armstrong et al. were offered the chance to see Ickx/Oliver take victory in '69 but cried off because they didn't want to get dust in their chrono pusher buttons. The big girls.

Diversion, if you'll permit; Mark, at BTAP you were sporting the Speedie but said that it would be yours if you could sell that Boxster. Does the fact that you own it mean that you did? If so then I doff my cap in your general direction!
hehe I actually got it for selling 10 cars worth £895,000 in 6 days.

Sadly the Boxster remains, viz http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I think I was concerned about the Speedmaster getting covered in suntan cream, beer, dust etc.

Point taken about their ruggedness though.

Mark - despite my flippant comment above, I'm not wearing mine to LM either. Don't trust myself not to smack it into a wall when drunk, etc etc and it just isn't designed to be as rugged as a sub because it was made to a very different job. Since I wouldn't wear it over more rugged watches that I have for a boozy night out in the UK, I'm not going to wear it in France either...

The space certification was mainly a consequence of the fact that the hesalite face cracked rather than shattered under the extremes of the NASA testing process, not because it could cope with the rigours of a busy weekend en Sarthe...

I want a cheapie watch I can use for Le Mans without taking my beloved Speedmaster Professional.
Christ Mark, I know Le Mans can be a bit rough, but it's not that bad.
hehe Its not the roughness, it is the falling over, camping in dust, showering kind of danger
I'll lend you my G-Shock Special Black Resin Limited Edition (Limited to 100,000 pieces) which cost me the earth-shattering sum of Sixty Of Your Great British Pounds.

It's no good for looking cool, but by gum, it's good at telling the time in adverse conditions.

That does look tough. Sort of "on its own with the cockroaches after a nuclear apocalypse" tough.

I have a G-shock with the analogue face. Went climbing with it. Lept up to grab a hold, smacked watch against a quickdraw (ie a type of caribiner) with the sort of sound solid lumps of metal make against watch crystal. The sort of sound that elicits, "Oh, bks." as you realise what it was. Expected to see a smashed crystal. Not a mark! Disappointing, really, as I want to buy a Tough Solar and know I won't be able to get much for this watch.

In fact, I'm trying to make this watch battle-scarred in the most natural way possible (ie no taking of hammers to it) and it's proving quite difficult.

That one (in the pic above) is the one I wear at work when shoving my hands and arms into racks full of equipment, pulling cables through underfloor areas, and that sort of thing. I wrecked (unto death) a cheapo Casio digital (not a G-Shock) doing that. I also wear it when I'm doing stuff like knocking out stone fireplaces. I'm not joking or exaggerating when I say that it looks very nearly (there's a few marks on the nickel-plated buckle) brand new. I thought I'd got some good honest wabi on it one time whilst removing a rather awful archway from our living room, but it all washed off in the shower.
