Or was it never there to start with?

There's one in the window at Ernest Jones in Welwyn Garden City, priced at list. It's the first time I've ever seen a new SS Rolex dive watch in an AD shop window.

It doesn't look quite as overbearing in the flesh as it does in pics, but still a very hefty chunk of metal.

Gary.

I've noticed a few other "hen's teeth" Rolex models lately too. I've seen both a black and a white faced Milgauss at my local AD, and a couple of SS black faced Daytonas in other stores too. Either Rolex have increased supply (unlikely) or dealers have had orders cancelled which were originally made when the economy was in an entirely different place.

I had heard that a lot of customers pre-ordered these watches and then when they saw them in the flesh, for whatever reason decided not to buy. That is why there are a few in shop windows.

i' d be curious to hear which stores have black face ss daytonas in their windows. Maybe the white gold models which are a lot more 'common'?

Hmm, I very much doubt that you'd find a new ss daytona in a shop window unless it's at a premium.

That was my first reaction, but it was definitely SS.

What 'bubble'? Can't people buy them because they like them, not because they are rare, likely to increase in value or be fashionably 'now'??

I bought mine becasue I like it and it suits my size - and because it's the first sports rolex that feels really 'solid' to me.

If you read many of the watch forums around, there are endless reports of SS Daytonas sitting in AD's.

Wondered when you'd chip in!

Sounds weird, but I'm now struggling to remember. I've been around and about a bit of late. It was definitely in the UK though...

I said "bubble" because when they came out, some speculators were asking up to £10k for them. And even now Blowers are asking almost £1k over list.

So I was surprised to see one in a shop window at list price.

And like it or not, Rolex do appear to cynically manipulate the market on some models by artificially limiting supply. But if they tried this on the Deepsea it doesn't appear to be working.

I imagine it's simply too big for most people to wear. I expect values of the old model are pretty strong though

Issue with the SS Daytonas is just a price thing, supply and demand.

Less that 2 years ago the list price was about £4000 and you could sell them all day for about £6-7000. Today the list has rocketed up to something like £6350 but they will still only fetch £6500-7500 when sold on.

The "profit" margin was really the only thing keeping that watch in the Uber-Popular zone and that margin has now gone.

It makes buyers look at the SS Daytona in a very different light when you're paying "market value" for one rather than £2000 under "market value"

I paid £3950 for mine about 3 years ago (rolex movement) and I had been on the waiting list for 6 years. Its great for me knowing that it will always be worth far more than I paid for it, but I would think twice about spending £6500 on one today if I didn't already have one.

Just my $0.02 smile

Virtually all new SS Rolex (sports) models sell above list for a few weeks/months. The Daytona remained above list much longer than others have though.

I was in Bridgetown the other week and there were both white and black faced SS Daytonas in a shop. A few years ago I'd buy one to sell on but not anymore.

I can't think of any other mass produced watches that sell over list like that. It really is a phenomenon unique to Rolex. Must be nice for Rolex though.
