I'm forever hearing stories about people sending their Rolex off for a service and it coming back like new. Well this has never happened to me! My Submariner came back last time in exactly the condition it was sent in. I only hope it was serviced. This time I asked for it to be serviced and whether a few scratches could be polished out, simple enough. I was told this would mean a refurbish and a quote would be forthcoming. Well today it arrived 2,600 GBP. This consisted of a replacement of everything except the case and movement pretty much! So all I can say is that refurbishment means replacement and true craftmanship has gone out of the window.
Well I'm only going to pay 265 GBP for a service and then will think about taking the watch to an independant to see what they can do! In the meantime I will fall back on the trusty Omega, Tag and Citizen Diver but as a gesture for the moment am content with my G-Shock, that will take everything I can throw at it and tell better time!

I took my Submariner to Watches of Switzerland in Bond Street 3 weeks ago and they said it would take around 12 weeks to service the watch. £270 plus anything else that needed doing once they took it apart. I have not heard from them yet. I had also understood that the price would include a polish. There are numerous minute scratches in the gold (mine is a steel/gold strap) which can be buffed out. Will let you know if it is actually done!

Crikey. Mine had £390 (iirc) bill attached and a 3 month wait but did come back pretty much as new (new crystal and crown plus service and recondition - i.e. polish out dings and scratches. I was impressed to be honest but I wouldn't pay over £2,000 - may as well get a new one...

Wow, £2600? Do you have a break down of the estimate? Has the watch been damaged or suffered water ingress?
You might find that Rolex will not carry out a service unless certain estimated parts are replaced. I'd be surprised if Rolex are able to service a watch requiring such extensive replacement (assumed).

No its not been damaged or had water ingress, I rejected their kind offer and they are just going to service it. I took my wifes gold/stainless datejust my TAG and the rolex Sub gold/steel all in for a service and asked if it would be polished as I would like it to come back like new with the few scratches removed. Whether the dealer thought I had more money than sense I don't know but I was quoted for loads of new cosmetic bits including a new bracelet at 1400 quid.
I'm going to be really interested to see how its comes back, so its 270 for the service and I was told a new crown was required on all subs so thats another 38 quid.
I just don't feel that I'm getting the true picture here though and someone, Rolex or the dealer is desperate for a bit of profit.

The bracelet cost accounts for a large part of the quote. Rolex will re-finish the case, the sides are polished and the top matted with the bevel between the two being re-cut. These do look great when done by Rolex.

My family (Mum, Dad and my missus) get theirs done by a guy who has been Rolex Service certified for years. He comes and collects, full service and returns them looking lovely - great attention to detail. He also trades them second hand and will do all the customisation or refurbishment work for you (changing to a new dial, repolishing the bracelet, new bezels, etc.,) Got the wife's Rolex from him last year.

He's based in the Bromley/Chislehurst area so covers most areas nearby (we're in Sidcup)

Yep, as Rolex UK have their service centre at Bexley there are quite a few good watchmakers in the area.
Small world, I'm in Bickley...

Ditto, I would be very interested in getting details, pm me if possible.
I've had this Sub a while now and it would be good to see it back to its best.
Cheers
