Legendary post. The way I see it some people are just born/bred collectors/archivers/hoarders.

Something's not right when you have that many! I have a fair few myself now but it'd take serious work to get that bad.

Seen it before.

Far too many to actually enjoy.

I cannot see the point either, especially as a lot of them looked the same. I suppose he could open a shop.....

That's not a collection, that's an indication of a condition.

The question of "how many watches is too many" is a tricksy one. For people who wear a watch as a purely functional item the answer is two. Those of us who like watches for their own sake feel that owning "some" watches is a worthwhile thing to do. But there has to be some point where you say "That's enough watches for me." It's impossible to decide on exactly where that point ought to be.

Is more watches than you can wear in a week, wearing a different watch every day too many? Possibly, but not definitely.

More watches than you can wear in a month? That's probably too many, but I can just about understand how one could end up owning 30 watches.

More watches than you can wear in a year? Oh yes! By the time we're into the hundreds, I think we're safely into the "more than enough" zone.

And by way of disclosure I have:
1960's Omega Constellation which used to be my grandfather's

Win (yes, the cigarette lighter people) branded diver's watch bought when I did my scuba certification

Seiko sports chrono which Mrs bikemonster gave me when we got engaged 9 yrs ago

AstroAvia pilots' style watchfrom Werner's (thanks PH!)

Seiko "5" military style watch on nylon web strap

Seiko Orange Monster

I think 7 or 8 is probably a safe figure before the SWMBO one in one out purchase policy is put into force. If required, this maximum total watch ownership cap can be increased +1 by shoving her into a shoe shop as you run for it.

Does any one know more about this watch magpie ? I bet Dominic H is rubbing his knees planning his retirement.

hehe

The thing I'm trying to work out is that even if the guy was in his 70s and started in his early 20s (ie when he got his first full time job), how many watches would he have to buy a week to own 10,000? The answer is approximately 4. That means he could have spent Monday to Thursday lunchtimes watch shopping for 50 years. Wouldn't you get... bored?

Sounds like a pretty stellar lunchtime compared to most of mine- sometimes I treat myself to a Tunnocks teacake if I'm feeling excessive biggrin. hehe Good job he doesnt have a car showroom near his place of work, though. I wonder, actually, what cars he has- rich guy who buys and forgets things (thus has a few exotic cars), or an enthusiast on average wage with a watch obsession who builds an amazing collection over many decades by cutting everything else.

He needs a new camera too.

Just one will do but with a focusing option.

That guy has issues. Kinda lucky it was watches he got into though, not something cheaper nor more expensive. Had it been stamps, his garage would be full, had it been cars.... well.... his garage would be full too I suppose.

A mate if mine collects Pulsar Spoon watches, predominantly bought on eBay - he's got about 40, some of them identical to one another!

Tell me he has a Spoon-tuned Honda... or is he just a fan of cutlery?
