Ok, I've been idly musing and have found myself looking at Carreras or Monacos. With no particular budget in mind (ok say no more than £2k), through an odd set of circumstances I've found myself wanting a really nice watch - having not worn one for a couple of years.

So I got thinking.

I really like the look of a brown strapped / gold circle faced Tag Heuer Carrera, but having mentioned it on my facebook a certain PH member commented that an original Heuer is the way to go - and I've even found myself looking at things like this and quite liking it! http://www.heuerboy.com/updown.htm

But then also I love the romance that goes with something like a Steve McQueen Monaco.

So, I'm not sure what I'm asking really - perhaps just an idea of some sites to browse further on, get an idea of prices and more importantly see more watche - the one thing I've learnt very quickly is that there's not one "Monaco" or not one "Carrera" - so the choice is somewhat baffling!

Urmmmm......thanks for listening to me smile

Thanks guys!

Is there a certain kudos that comes with an original Heuer, rather than a Tag Heuer? I do rather like that brown/silver one I linked to in my second post you see!

Also, how would one actually go about seeing one? Do I have to make a trek to the city or will I be able to find one at some other watch/jewellery shops (I'm in Kent if that matters?)

Most of these Tag's are reissues of original heuers, they won't really appreciate in price and to me, lack any soul.

Why don't you get a vintage heuer carrera from the year you were born? 2K will get you a lovely one.

So while they won't appreciate, they wont lose much money then I take it? While I'm not buying with an intention to sell, it would be nice to know that if I needed to sell, for whatever reason, I wouldn't be losing massive amounts.

A vintage one does have an appeal - I'll investigate some more. Thanks.

the first one - the original is stunning.

I'm in same boat - haven't worn a watch since I was 18 - i'm now 34. Want something nice - budget about the same as yours..........

I was leaning towards an Omega Seamaster - just because I have quite an outdoor life and I want the non scratch waterproof features.

That original though - is stunning

In heuer boy's sold gallery there's a few similar to this, which I really do like.

http://www.heuerboy.com/image/sold/114.jpg

So I think I'm going to hold and wait to see something like this come up smile

I saw the ForSale section on onthedash but couldn't really see anything similar - are there any other vintage type sites I could check on? The new one though really is still appealing, but I'd have to see the vintage one in real life to be certain. My word a classic does have it's charms though smile

Tony, between a new tag and an old Heuer I'd go old Heuer any day - as you've seen, the vintage stuff is an interesting and I think better alternative. Watchuseek and tz-uk are the two biggest general forums for opinions and research. Would you be happy about wearing it all the time though is the only question I'd ask myself.

RaceMDR - without trying to sound evangelical and at the risk of sounding unutterably boring I'd suggest you have a look at Sinn as well, there are some good models for 'outdoors, waterproof' sort of stuff.

Generally Heuer vs Tag Heuer, the Heuer would be my choice everytime, but if was to be my only watch, then perhaps something newer like the Heuer branded, hand wound version of the Carrera would hit the spot

Is there a reason it has to be a Tag/Heuer - looked at other PH favourites?

Yep would be happy to wear it (most) days - to work, for example, and out and about. I want to get use out of it, rather than store it somewhere.

Ooo I like that! I do quite like the silver / brown leather of the one I linked to above, I assume they do a similar colour scheme in that one you posted?

You said it's "Heuer branded" - so does that mean they still make Heuers as opposed to Tag Heuers, then? (forgive my ignorance! I thought Heuer was just older ones?)

Not particularly - a friend of mine has a Monaco which I really liked, so got looking around, and found that Carrera above and really really liked that - so kinda stuck with that.

I have looked at other brands (not as detailed) and not really seen anything that's caught my eye, and I must admit I do like the name that Tag / Heuer brings with it also - but if you have other thoughts, please do suggest!

Thanks all, much appreciated

TAG Heuer History

Basically Heuer 'Mr Heuer' started making watches in 1860, the 1950's/60's were the hayday (IMHO) for their watch design, then in 1985 TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde bought Heuer, and then in 1999 Loius Vuitton appears to have bought 50.1% of the stock.

The watches that are made today with Heuer on the dial will have TAG Heuer on the back and come in a TAG Heuer box, they are very nice watches but basically copies of the classics. wink

Have they changed the movements or do the current watches use the same movements as found in the original Heuers?

How can they be copies? Shirly if TAG bought Heuer then then they own the company that designed the watches in the first place and they are just continuing to make watches.

Its like saying when TVR was sold to the Russian guy all the TVR's sold from then on were copies.
