I'm not sure I fully understand the following that the standard (stainless steel) Sub has. Is it not just a poor mans Sea-Dweller??
I've always thought the SeaDweller was the mad child of the Sub, the sub being the classic and the Sea Dweller like it but better, stronger, faster - well, not faster but you know what I mean. The Sub isn't a dumbed down SD, rather the SD is an advancement of an already robust and reliable watch. Just my perception.

I don't know if the following has any one reason, people buy Rolex for different reasons but the Sub is a 'can't go wrong' sort of watch - the only negatives about it are more related to brand rather than anything intrinsic to the watch. Despite Rolex's best efforts I think it's classless (in the good sense), an 'everyman' sort of watch. Come to think of it, probably an 'everywhere' one as well. Just a shame it's always that teensy-weensy bit more expensive than you think it should be worth...

NB. I'm not a Sub 'hater' (I own a 50th Anni Sub). It's just my view of where the model sits in the Rolex sports range.
Sub's more a piece of Jewelery whilst the SD is a workeable 'tool' watch.

You don't get two-tone Sea Dwellers!

Both great watches. The steel sub hasn't been updated yet but will do next year. So will get a ceramic bezel, maxi dial, new style thicker case and solid link bracelet with glidelock clasp. I reckon it'll be a good idea to get one of the last old style subs as they will be sought after in a few years.
I think next year's new SS Sub will be the absolute business due to the features you mention. I would get the new one over the current version for those reasons, and never mind the current one possibly becoming sought after in a few years. I would just want the better watch. A non-scratch ceramic bezel insert would be a joy.

I'm sure the new sub will be a great piece of kit. I'll be interested to see what the new green bezel sub will look like too. Also there's the new explorer 1 and 2 coming out next year, can't wait to see those!

Interesting, I didn't know they were bringing out new Explorers! I have a white dial Explorer II, so I'll be interested in these.

I've had a quick chat this morning at the AD I have used in the past. The new Sub (new bezel/case etc) had arrived in stock and will be available for viewing mid/end of this month.

The bi-metal version was around £6700, I think I heard him right !! eek Thats about £1000 more than the current one.

Do you mean a TT new type sub, as opposed to SS?

deepsea is abnormaly big. It is not a pretty watch. I was going to buy one and when i went to pick it up, i tried it on and as much as i wanted to love it, i just could not. It was not right. Too big, but not in the right way. It is kind of too thick. As if someone had strapped a can of beer on your wrist.

And that is from someone regularly wearing panerai 44mm.

Instead i now have a pam 90 and a gmt2c. The latter being the prettiest / elegant (if not the most desirable) of the current range.

I'd agree with that. My local AD has a Deepsea in the window sat alongside a Submariner. It looks OK from the top, but it's a thick old beast, and the case edges look quite sharp. I wouldn't even try it on for that reason. Why Rolex don't make more of their cases the same as the Yacht-Master with rounded edges, I don't know. It's a comfy wear.

My beef with the SDDS is not the size, but the fact that it appears to be on a bracelet designed for a watch half its size.

If Rolex chunked up the bracelet in proportion with the rest of the watch, I'd like it a lot more.

It's a big fat watch. It needs a big fat bracelet.

very true, when you have it on you wrist, you realise the lack of proportion.
