I've never seen this approach before - perhaps it is common but I know nothing about it. But on a random weave across the net regarding watches I came across this particular watch.

Now if you want to see all the bits of your watch, skeleton movements have been built but in order to retain enough strength for the thing not to collapse, metal must remain in parts of the plates and bridges, leaving a confusion between actual movement parts and carved support structures.

This watch uses sapphire, as per the crystals, for all the plates and bridges. So the entire support of the movement is transparent, and all you see are the wheels and levers.

Coupled with an attractive movement (edited: this one uses a double tourbillon - I thought it was Sea-Gull's at first but it lacks the 'diamonds' for the 'sea gull' head - in reality it's the Beijing Watch Factory's double tourbillon) and here's something you could stare at for hours nuts

A few things struck me about it though. Firstly, why the hell is some OEM making this and not Sea-Gull itself? It's well into the top end of Chinese watches (220,000 yuan = £19,273 according to my helpful currency converter) and you'd have thought that Sea-Gull would want the top end to itself rather than sell the nicest movements to OEMs. Secondly, if sapphire is strong enough for this particular application, why haven't I seen it before? Is this *really* a Chinese invention in watchmaking? I find this hard to believe - the Chinese are not really known for innovation in this space.

[edit - it's not Sea-Gull's double tourbillon, it's the Beijing Watch Factory's double tourbillon, the TB02 movement. The Beijing factory is more expensive than Sea-Gull and more prestigious AFAIK. It also explains the logo / chinese characters on the 'dial' - it's BWaF's own - so it's not an OEM, but a Beijing Watch brand watch being sold via a different online shop. I guess the Chinese watch brands aren't quite so precious about being re-sold through online shops...]

Or have I been duped by a photoshop job?

confused

Here's a picture if you can't be bothered to click the link... you probably will once you see it smile Truly mental.
