Slightly tough one, my Cayman broke down decisively on Saturday in Welwyn Garden. I live in Sussex & was visiting my mum. The car's currently at her house, I know what's wrong with it & I've ordered the parts to repair it & get under way again. However, the Mot ran out today, so I'm in a position where I have to schlep 100 miles to hers with a borrowed car full of tools, repair mine & immediately take it for test.

I've pencilled Friday in to get this done, but what I'm looking for is any knowledge of an MOT place in WGC or Hatfield etc. where I could, if required snag a test at short notice or even push one back 24 hours I.e a bit of flexibility.

I realise I may be asking a silly question here, but you never know. Having not lived in WGC for 20 years, I'm a bit out of touch but my thinking is the spannering mught happen quickly or I might run into problems but ultimately if I can't get a test by Saturday morning, I face having to go back to Sussex without the car for a second time.

Book it into your local MOT station as normal. Your legally able to drive a car with no test to the test station. Explain it to the tester, and he will ask for the reg number, and if you're stopped, the police will call the MOT station and check. All will be well.

do you have a regular MOT place?

I'm guessing no breakdown cover in place to drag her home so once you get her running phone your local place and book it in,

you can driver completely legally to and from an MOT testing station, as long as theres a test booked. distance doesn't come into it.

I was under the impression that I can only legally drive without an MoT to the test station for a booked test. Since I'd have to collect the repaired car Saturday & couldn't possibly get to my test at my local place by midday when they'd shut, wouldn't I have a hard time explaining to Mr Policeman a Monday test I.e. the next available day?

Just up the A1: Stevenage Tyres & MOT. Did my L322 last year, also fixed a bust bulb and advisories were sensible. Nice guys and very flexible on timing. They also did a nice job of my 4 wheel alignment.

You should be fine with a test booked, even for the next day.

A couple of years ago I drove a car back from the south of france to bristol on a friday and had an MOT test booked for monday. I didn't get stopped though but I doubt a copper is going to do much, there are loads of cars driving around with lapsed MOT's just from where people have forgotten.

Maybe I'm being over cautious but I've looked up the relevant law & it states I can only drive without an MoT if I'm going to a test station, which potentially I wouldn't be & while getting away with it is possible, the downsides are a £1000 fine & seizure of my Porsche which I'm not prepared to risk because someone on the internet said I'd probably be ok.

Cheers for the suggestions though, I'm on the phones this morning booking it in.

Pretty much this. I managed to drive for over 3 months with a lapsed MOT once, purely because I had forgotten all about it and had more important things (to me)to think about at the time.

Must have gone through loads of ANPR cameras in that time and never got a knock at the door. You'll be fine.

Managed to book a test on Sunday here, so I'll spanner it up on Saturday, take my mum out for dinner Saturday night like a good boy & shoot home the following morning.

These chaps are very good. Used them many times for tyre fitting, alignments and MoTs. Spotless premises too.

They are part of Protyre group and my dealings with them have been first class over last 18 months. Wouldn't hesitate to reommend them on the quality of work and service I've had there.
