What's the Oxygen Nightclub in Bedford like?

What sort of people go in there?
What sort of age are they?
Is there any trouble?
Is it expensive?
Is the music good?

Only been there once a couple of months back as it was my turn to be the obligatory balding bloke stood at the bar going "ooh, it's too loud".

There's a mixture of ages, but obviously there's more younguns. Early 20's mostly rather than the 16 year olds with fake id though, and there were a fair number of 30 somethings. There's a big room as you first enter (after climbing a steep set of stairs, my knees !!) which plays garage/house/whateverthehelltheycallit, through which you access a large bar area with a small dancefloor. The music in there is a little strange, they played the theme from Ghostbusters followed by the theme from Baywatch at one point. Seems to be a bit of an in-thing there as everyone went bonkers. A lot of 70's and 80's stuff.

As you may have gathered I'm not the clubbing type (I'm more likely to go to Esquires, not for people of a nervous disposition) but Oxygen was actually ok. No more expensive than other clubs in the area, no trouble on the night we were there and I actually quite enjoyed it.

The best bit without doubt being the guy that tripped coming off the dance floor and travelling around 30 yards at an alarming angle before managing to get upright without falling over, followed by a little jog in a very bad attempt to make it look like he meant to do it laugh

Thank you AM, that's excellent and gives me some idea what it's like. It certainly sounds better than some dives I've been in.

What's Esquires like? I'm trying to find somewhere for a hen night with a mixed age group.

Esquires is a little "alternative". As said above, I'm not the clubbing type and can't stand the type of music they tend to play so Esquires suits my ears if nothing else. I wouldn't recommend it for a hen night!!!

Oxygen will probably be just fine for you, although it is quite away from the High Street where most of the decent pubs are, and is not in the best of areas.

If you're looking for a decent pub, I was in the Banker's Draft on the High Street for a very rare night out with the lads on Friday and quite liked it, though for a pub nearer to Oxygen I'd go for the Pilgrim's Progress on River Street.

Cheers AM. I don't know whether we'll definitely go to Bedford, I'm still looking for ideas.

This is getting a bit close for comfort now Andy! Esquires is my Bedford choice, seen some good bands there.

Anyone been to the Pad? The smallest dance floor in the UK?

If you like Esquires try the Angel.

I used to frequent The Angel years ago, then if memory serves it closed for a while before opening fairly recently. I've got a feeling it the same people that run Esquires that run the Angel, and yes they do book some very good bands. I saw Therapy play a warm up gig for Donington at Esquires a while back and more recently saw Hayseed Dixie, and they've had Coldplay, Super Furry Animals, Travis, Supergrass and Franz Ferdinand play there in the past to name but a few.

Assuming you're up at the Finals (I see your Dad has entered) pop up the tower and say hello. I'll be there on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Not sure about Saturday yet.

Yep, i will be at the Finals! Looks a belter if the weather stays like this.

You are right, the Angel and Esquires are owned by the same people.

I remeber going to the Angel and seeing some up and coming band called The Killers...

i quite like the pad, seen a few big people there actually, including DJ Yoda and Greenpeace (seperatly) amongst others... if you like that sort of music, or they do indie/rock style stuff on saturday's...

curiously never been to esquires...

oxygen can be ok, though it can be full of 16 year olds getting drunk on WKD or whatever shit they drink these days...

further to AM's description which was pretty good, describing the RnB room and the other one is the "cheesy room" hence the baywatch theme, there is also a chillout room and upstairs again a dance room

i'm not trying to promote the place, i actually don't really like it but sometimes i'm dragged there and it can be alright, as long as you remember you are acutally going for a night out in bedford. ie, dont get your hopes up too high!

trouble can kick off, usually by one of the aformentioned 16 year olds, but is generally quashed pretty quickly...

Di and myself went over to Bedford last week and got talking to a couple of barmaids who said Time & Envy (is that right?) is the best club to go to in Bedford. Any feedback on that?

(we are going to go to Bedford coz that's Di's old stomping ground, so it seems a good place for her to say goodbye to her last night of freedom)

Matt will have been to tart with the pole dancers the week before, he would not be allowed to do the same thing 2 weeks running...
