Hmmm, I wonder if he cares how much hassle he is causing to thousands of motorists, or am I being a selfish git?

As the police arrive on the scene they should make an announcement along the following lines:

"Sir. Your safety is our concern. In five minutes we will be shutting the motorway in both directions. As soon as we have done that we will be asking for volunteers from the waiting motorists to pop up there and assist you down. When we have 12 volunteers we will instruct 6 to approach you on the gantry from one side and the other 6 to approach from the other side of the gantry. At that point your options will be reduced to two. You can either jump or be escorted off the gantry by the twelve angry motorists who will have a mandate to remove you however they see fit.

Sir, you now have four minutes until we stop the traffic"

I don't think it would get to three minutes.
