I drove from Bristol to Berkhamsted (and back) yesterday; the satnav took me up the A335 through Amersham and Chesham due to problems on the normal M25 route.

Have the Bomb Squad been practicing with the roads through these two places? The craters and potholes in the roads are horrendous. It's not too bad in daylight as you stand a chance of steering around them, but on a wet and dark evening in traffic things, are more difficult.

I don't think that I have ever seen through roads in the UK in such a state. Brother in law who lives up that way says that the roads have been like this since last winter (08/09), not as a result of the recent frost and snow.

What's the story behind the lack of action by the local authority/highways department?

Snow hasnt helped, but bear in mind the local councils cant even afford to run the street lights anymore ("experimental switch off" ), its going to be an ongoing fault for a while I think.

Sounds like a challenge to St.Albans highways department. I would put my money on these monkeys creating the best potholes. Come to St.Albans for a comparison, but don't forget to bring a soft cushion on your seat and the phone number of your preferred wheel repairer.

The roads in Wycombe are just as bad, it looks like the old holes have been dug up again by the snow & frost! Shocking eek

Ah a familiar story! I live in St.Albans and used to work in Chesham. Roads round here were a nightmare before the snow and ice. Gonna be so bad when it all melts away. Even when they do resurface they don't do it properly just chuck loads of gravel down. USELESSS!!!! Rant over!
