'Collided with the undercarriage' - can only think this means the tailwheel.

Why would this have made the plane unflyable? Had it struck the elevator or rudder you think he'd have said so.

The wing tip of the Skyraider smacked into the underside of the P-51. As that is where the radiator is, I recon he had immediate engine overheating problems and possible hydraulic problems too. He had to make a very quick decsion to stay with the aircraft or get out.

He chose the latter, but only with seconds to spare.

Didn't someone say a lot of the control lines run through that area, the impact effectively taking out control of the elevators/rudder.

Doubt if it would have been a hydraulic issue, that is unless he tried to put the gear or flaps down as I believe that's all that's operated hydraulically on the 51

My bet's on elevator/rudder control surface/trim cable disruption along with a good dose of "oh sh.t we're too low for this I'm out of it..."

Of course it's not worthing guessing though, wait for the report...

Sounds about right to me from what I've heard of period aircraft.
