Hmm, maybe they could open some cabins as hotel rooms and have some car parking on the deck?

City running out of facilities? Stick a ship in it!

So she's our largest warship.

And the best name we could give her was HMS Ocean irked

What else was on the shortlist, I wonder:

HMS Boat
HMS Ship
HMS Float
HMS Dogger Bank

So, nothing to do with having a full range of medical facilities and the ability to hide hundreds of Booties inside the steel hull then. All this in addition to the flight deck and helis.

It sounds like a sensible plan.

Is the US Navy going to have a CVN or a Gator parked in the Thames estuary too? Well, they always by coincidence have a CVN on a friendship visit whenever POTUS comes to stay.
If you wanted medical facilities you'd want Argus as she while not technically ' a hospital ship' can provide full on role 3 + facilities as primary casualty receiving ship - to be blunt any decent warehouse can be turned into a hospital fairly quickly and scanners , operatign thetres and X ray equipment delivered to site in semi trailers or mobile units that fold down into ISO -box sized packages ...

the primary problem that is faced for an air defence point of view is lack of airfield space close to London and Apaches and lynx operating off Ocean are a convenient way to help with that issue

while fixed wing QRA arrangements are being varied for the Olympic period , the helicopters are another part of the plan ...

Granted, she's got a large(ish) sickbay but......"a full range" of facilities? Better and bigger than the main London hospitals?
As I said in my other reply I think people are getting HMS Ocean ( an Ambiphibous assault ship / helicopter carrier)confused with RFA Argus ( Helicopter training vessel / primary casualty recieving ship which has Operating Theatres and CT Scanner(s) as PCRS which can deliver 'role 3' medical cover

"Role 4" medical provision hasn't been deployed or deployable for many years as it's a full on fully functioning hospital and the way the coalition forces have worked in Iraq ( the second time) and Afghanisatian has been the airlift casualies with the most serious injuries straight back to friendly nations and established hospitals - the Uk also has the option to full open the Hospital in the Cyprus SBA that normally runs at a small fraction of capacity to support options in the middle east / arabian type location)

Close but no cigar - you can clearly see a bootneck in the cab of the Mk5 - pretty sure he would have got off pronto if it was about to be ripped from it's davits. Anyway - I'll ask my cousin - he drives them and report back.

If it's any consolation I thought exactly the same things when I first heard of the ship. It may be an illustrious name but it's hardly an inspiring name.

It is a rubbish name, especially when the much better and even more illustrious 'HMS Temeraire' is not currently used.

(except as the name of a sports centre, as far as I can tell)

Had a walk down the river to see her, lots of activity with men in balaclavas on ribs and landing craft, and a few helicopters went up.

No she's moored up by the Cutty Sark.

Ye gods, a cardboard box under the elevated bit of the M4 would be better.

The two new carriers have by far the most boring names.

Some of the Lynx from Ocean have been up and down the Thames, including just now, to the Gravesend area and back. Quite dull though , was hoping for some Typhoons.
