I've been a civvy now for almost 13 years and the cuts in service for me were massively noticable and since i have left, the navy seems decimated. Lets hope the sacrifices to ensure we got the 2 carriers were worth it in losses elsewhere.
Sadly time and history will not show that not to be the case.....especially after the likely next set of cuts to be announced very shortly take place.

I don’t think anyone outside of the Scottish shipbuilding yards think the carriers are a good idea.

Who have far more resources than the RN to spend on them

France manage it on a comparable defense spend budget, and a proper carrier as well.

They have recently announced its replacement to be built, which will be an even bigger nuc powered catapult carrier.

Several sections were built in English yards; guess again!

Given how much of a dog's dinner their first CVN has been that is a surprise.

What does this even really mean?

It was designed in England, by an English company.

Some, most even, of the steelwork was built/assembled in Scotland, but some was done in Devon, on the Mersey, the Tyne.

Then there's engines, DGs, GTs, EMs. Lifts, doors, HVAC, routed systems, and just loads and loads of other stuff that was procured from companies across the country. They probably liked the idea.

Although you might want to check what the B stands for in BAe Systems hehe

Isn't China building Islands?

I could do, but BAe Systems haven't had a small e in their name for a very long time, nor did they do the design for the carrier.

D'Oh, I forgot they went big E when they became Systems. Who did the design work then? I thought it mainly them and Thales?

It was a BMT design.

They have a ex-Russian Carrier, and are now building their own.

Yes, but not BAE.
BMT DSL, based in Bath, were contracted by Thales UK for the ship design, Thales being primarily an electronics/weapons manufacturer. Thales FR had no input whatsoever.

The only French national who worked on the project AFAIK was employed by BMT long before it started.

After the MoD's response to the ship design completion was "can we have both" then there was some minor BaE involvement in the design, but it was still primarily the BMT design.

'Both'?

The design at bid stage was by BMT. It evolved from there under the ACA (Aircraft Carrier Alliance) which was led by Thales with BAE Systems and many other companies (including BMT).

The IPT decided that they liked features of both proposals and asked for them incorporated in one design. That makes a lot more sense than 'wanted both'.

Anyway, point is, more than just Scottish Shipbuilders done well out of it, and think it a worthwhile exercise!
