Isn’t there already a very long thread about the F35 and all its issues/detractors on here? I think it’s this one.

In other news, lightly pencil in Saturday May 1st into your diary if you want to wave off HMS QNLZ on her deployment.
Unconfirmed as yet, but it looks likely - barring the usual last minute snags.

And in case you're worried, all crew will have received two doses of anti-covid vaccine by then.

A brief outline of the upcoming 6 months deployment.

In the 90s that would have included a nice jolly in Hong Kong and some big nights out in wan chai and the dodgier parts of Lan Kwai Fong followed by tattoos in Ricky & Pinky’s tattoo parlour for the stokers whilst officers were swanning around the swankier bars trying to score some expat girls and impressing them with their stories about being RN helicopter and fighter pilots.

I was on Ark Royal for the Outback 88 deployment. Took in Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines before heading for Aus smile

an oppo of mine is currently deployed on a T23, and says its ste, the ship isn't stopping anywhere because of Covid, no flying home for 2 weeks leave, or partners allowed out, its a crap time to be going on a deployment atm.

I wonder how Nelson, Mountbatten, or even Prince Philip would have responded to that complaint?

My old next door neighbour from back in the late 90's, was ex-RN/FAA and his first deployment was on the final deployment of HMS Eagle....which was just over a year long, from late 70 to early 72. I remember him saying in those days using the Suez canal was off limits because of the wars in the middle east, so after a few months cruising the Med, they headed down to Cape Town for a few weeks, before crossing the Indian Ocean and a few months around the flesh spots of the Far East, and then down around the south of Australia to New Zealand, back to Aus, back to HK and Singapore again, and then to the Persian Gulf before back around the southern Cape with a stop at Durban.
He seemed to enjoy it from the way told me the story smile
He had hoped to be on Ark's last deployment as well, but he was due to leave the Navy while she was on her last trip in 77/78, so couldn't say he served on both carriers last deployments.
For someone that fixed Buccaneers for a living in his early days, he was useless at DIY jobs!!

Looks pretty standard tbh - did NTG2000 and we had Gib, Muscat, Singapore, HK, Pusan, Shanghai and Vladivostok before heading across Pacific to the US. Six weeks on and off in Sembawang scarred me for life drink

I see two Baggers on deck currently, plus a regular Merlin. 7 due on today. Dot matrix sign says ship at flying stations, so hopefully a bit more action this afternoon.

I don't know, but they come from a different generation to you and me, I'm fairly positive one of the main joining factors to join the Navy this generation is to see the world, i know it was for me.

Aye, a different generation - when the ships were made of wood and the men were made of steel laughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaughlaugh

Nelson, Mountbatten and Prince Philip were all well known for enjoying themselves on land as well as serving with distinction at sea.

I reckon they'd be just as miffed about being denied a run ashore as today's matelots.

You genuinely believe lads and lasses join up to do their duty??
I guess you are unaware of the manning crisis? the endless gapped Billets on ships, Ships mothballed, lean running crews etc?

If there was a sense of duty amongst new recruits then the manning crisis wouldn’t be where it is would it?

The only reason WiFi was installed on ships was to get new guys and girls through the gates so they can stay connected on Facebook/WhatsApp etc. Seems duty isn’t enough nowadays, I wonder what Nelson, Mountbatten and Phillip think of that?

Also, Nelson, Mountbatten & The Duke of Edinburgh hardly represent those in the working ranks - & Nelson sailed when the pressgangs were still "recruiting"...hardly doing it from a sense of duty...
