RE: Vulcan to be grounded
Discussion
Still remember the first time I saw a Vulcan flying over Bilesley Common as a kid at the annual airshow with its bomb bay doors wide open.
BLOODY AMAZING!
Dissapointed to hear that yet again like the Concorde the Brits cant be bothered to keep this fantastic aircraft in the air for futire generations to marvel at
Its one thing to see it on the ground, but another to see it in flight and hear those Rolls Royce Olympus engines screaming.

Sad that we cannot as a country support this but we can do this with our money !

Use to see a frail old man on his walking sticks out and about with the local chavs giving him abuse most days.
Then one day while out with me dad we passed him,it seems he was at school with my dad and then joined the RAF.He then went on to fly Vulcans in the height of the cold war while carrying the bomb untill he had a meltdown and was retired early. So whats your day job then.

If we told the Governent to stop sending the ridiculous amounts of Aid to India, China et al, the Vulcan would be viable for years.
And before any wker s start trying to convince me or themselves that the aid is justified, India and china have the worlds fastest growing economies and spend a whole bunch of $ on space and nuclear programmes. Which they wouldn't be able to fund unless the had the generous aid provided by countries like ours.....

Was it the Vulcan that was suppose to bomb the runway in the Falklands?
They did a very good accurate bomb mission on that runway, put it out of use for the time being, but did not destroy it as it was going to be needed by us.I will be going to see the vulcan as much as i can next year.

Well thats the thing, the runway was totally useable for the duration of the conflict, 90% of bombs missed. The Argentine forces moved mud piles onto the runway so they looked like craters from high above.
That's missing the point. It sent a clear message: we can reach the Falklands by air, so we can also reach your mainland. That book is absolutely compelling: defy anyone not to read it in one sitting!DaveL485 said:

XH558 in a few years, and XL426 at Southend... how many more are there sitting around growing mould?
XL360 down the road from me in Coventry, and another down the road in Wellesbourne. The one at Wellesbourne runs, but doesn't fly.
Surely something can be done to recreate the expired parts? Cobble together from the 3 non flyers above?
I'm another that will do my best to help keep her in the skies if I win the lottery
It is a sad day indeed, we need to "push the boat out" so to speak for this year to get her shown at as many places as possible, I am amoungst the people who was hoping the wing mod would keep her flying for a bit longer, (this was disussed at the Vulcan AGM this year) but if funding for that cannot be found, and other parts are coming to the end of their life then maybe it is time to let her retire for good, (lets face it once she is grounded there will NEVER be another Vulcan in the air), However IF the money for the wing mod can be found and that gives us 1 years more of seeing her fly I'm all for supporting that.
Like plenty of others IF I had a big lottery win the VTTS would be one of my first calls!
My first experience of a Vulcan was XL391 at RAF Waddington when I was a CCF Cadet...

Thought someone would have beaten me up for my 'cut foreign aid' comment!
I used to live at Bessecar, Doncaster near to RAF Finningly and remember what I fantastic sight they were flying overhead.
Strange feeling of security as a little boy in the late 60's n early 70's knowing they were there to protect us.
As stated before, the visceral sound of those engines was so strong you could feel it in your internal organs.
I've donated previously to the cause and if I had a big enough EuroMillions win would make sure money went to this and the BBMF.

Whilst I would love to see a Vulcan fly indefinitely, I think that we have to remember that is is an old, heavy, complex and powerful aircraft, the airframes are 50 plus years old and regardless of cost it gets to a point where you are pushing your luck, they cant throw them around like they used to for various reasons, there were a few accidents with Vulcans, it is a well engineered aircraft but a 737 it isnt, it is more TVR than Kia, even with the money, support, expert volunteers, public enthusiasm and will to see it, I think it gets to a point where it is a bit risky to endanger the crew, and possibly the spectators flying 80 tonnes of aging strategic bomber over their heads. I may be wrong here, it may be just cash, suppose if there was enough money a new one could be built.
I think it's last flying hours should be used to capture some hi-def, 3D footage with awesome sound, to be shown in cinemas with appropriate sound reproduction, that can carry off the chest pummeling, ear rupturing, spine tingling noise that a Vulcan makes.
Over on Scoobynet, we have our own tame Vulcan pilot, he was accused some time ago of making it up, he came back with irrefutable proof and some fantastic stories, I can only begin to imagine what it must have been like, being sat in the front of something so big going up vertically, I get excited in a bit of turbulence, imagine piloting one of them back in the fifties.
