Absolutely, though a 1 on 1 'friendly' challenge match in Solent would be of great interest, it's unfortunate that the two sides are 12 hours apart, but on the other hand time difference hasn't really been much of an issue this time, nor when it was on West Coast USA.

13 hours at the moment. wink

I'd love to see some racing in the UK.

That’s what I thought.

That’s why it hasn’t been in the U.K. for so long. hehe

I think the location might be open to offers due to funding issues?

Looking at the arrangements for this AC

https://www.americascup.com/en/official/the-protoc...

It shows a bit about what the challenger of record is involved like sharing some costs and organising the Prada cup and Christmas series etc.

Well done NZ.

Needs a bigger course with more variability IMO.

Seeing as the Cup has been retained, now it can be revealed.

Flying across the sea, teaching a computer to sail

Sorry about bit of an advert.

Initially the real sailors kick the computer's arse, but eventually tables get turned and the computer starts tacking better than the crew. That's when it really gets useful.Think F1 simulations for a PH version.

That is very impressive stuff and I do not in any way underestimate the complexity of the problem and the computing and software power that has been deployed to improve the sailing performance.
My question is the use of AI. It is hard to find anything that is done these days without the claim of doing it with AI. AI used in meteorology to predict the weather ok but AI in a washing machine to give the perfect wash, not impressed.

Congratulations to Team NZL

I would like the next AC to be in NZ.

Two reasons, firstly NTZ won it and so should defend it there.

Secondly, we want to bring the trophy back to Britain as winners, not to be the challengers on our own turf.

Let’s win it in NZ and defend it in the Solent.

And it should be a race around the island like the original AC, not this narrow course stuff.

It’s official https://www.ineosteamuk.com/en/articles/411_Joint-...

And the response https://emirates-team-new-zealand.americascup.com/...

A Protocol Governing AC37 will be published within eight months including the provisions outlined in this release.

It has been agreed the AC75 Class shall remain the class of yacht for the next two America’s Cup cycles, and agreement to this is a condition of entry.

The teams will be restricted to building only one new AC75 for the next event.

A single Event Authority will be appointed to be responsible for the conduct of all racing and the management of commercial activities relating to AC37.

The Defender and the Challenger of Record, will be investigating and agreeing a meaningful package of campaign cost reduction measures including measures to attract a higher number of Challengers and to assist with the establishment of new teams.

A new Crew Nationality Rule will require 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country the team’s yacht club as at 19 March 2021 or to have been physically present in that country (or, acting on behalf of such yacht club in Auckland, the venue of the AC36 Events) for two of the previous three years prior to 18 March 2021. As an exception to this requirement, there will be a discretionary provision allowing a quota of non-nationals on the race crew for competitors from “Emerging Nations”.

There are a number of different options but it is intended that the Venue for the Match will be determined within six months and the dates of racing announced in the Protocol, if not before.

Some interesting developments there to try and get more teams.

I like the passport rules. Looks like Jimmy Spithill could still could race for Italy under those if he wanted?

The nationality rule should prevent an expensive bidding war for sailing talent.
It's the payroll which makes a campaign expensive (obviously the R&D costs) rather than the physical hardware.

I wonder which other countries will be interested in competing next time?

NZ, USA, ITALY, GB maybe also another USA or Italian boat plus possibly Malta or Netherlands again? Australia?

Interesting looking at this years challengers

Well, may the best computer win the next!

It's hard to tell exactly what anyone means by "AI" but things like Generative Design and Topology Optimisation have been becoming common for many years. I suspect they are running thousands of simulations on designs to optimise their boat.

Edit to add: It would be nice if they could do something about they hydraulics creaking. Perhaps introduce a noise limit or similar? Also more sustainable materials, they would surely attract sponsors if they could green things up a bit.

Thread resurrection, but I thought some of you guys may appreciate this as it's a great watch:

Whilst I'm here and also on Netflix, 'Maiden' the first all female round the world crew is even better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxhEInUzqlE

I watched Maiden this Sunday and was quite surprised to see Marie Claude on there, she joined us for a few days of cowes week this year, a very talented sailor who then competed a few years later in the whitbread. I would suggest this is a must watch for anyone who likes sailing or those with daughters.
