It's worth looking at the MoD apprentice schemes, they aren't as quite hands on as others but as far as breadth of opportunities go, it's hard to beat, UAVs, Typhoon, A400M, C17, Hawk...

He came back buzzing yesterday, was there 12 hours, he got to sit on the flightdeck of an A330 as it was towed (with a qualified engineer), had a tour of the airport in a van, helped with servicing the undercarriage on a plane, watched an A340 land at close range, was off like a shot this morning for seven AM.

Monarch engineering are considering closing the Manchester hangar and so are in consultation with staff at the moment, but that's due to the reduction in the MRO and especially heavy check market in the UK, however, whilst there are reductions in the base maintenace, the line maintenance stuff is increasing and there is still a massive need for engineers in the UK. So whilst the Manchester hangar might close, Monarch doesn't want to lose any of the engineers themselves.
As for the Ezy rumour. It's just that. We're owned by an investment firm and so they'll always be looking to make a return, the current rumours are EZY, Norwegian, Jet2 or even HNA (owners of Hainan airlines in China who also own Swissport and Gate Gourmet) any of which might be true or none of which might be true.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, as an apprentice it'd be up to us to try and ensure that they can continue their training and become licensed engineers. Monarch is an old fashioned company in that we take that responsibility very seriously and even if the worst happened, they'd be looked after.
Airbus (Broughton / Bristol) offer a full apprenticeship in manufacturing, a lot of the guys go on to get their licenses, it may open up the possibility of entering aerospace if he is not successful going direct to live.
Wages are not great, circa £32k, not that bad at 19/20 + OT, pensions etc.
Thomas Cook offer one at Manchester Airport as their apprentices did go to Deeside College for their training with Airbus.

Cheers, TC is the one he really wants, but it is so competitive, he did his work experience there, I got talking to a mate of my brother who works there and he kindly sorted it all out, he had a fantastic time and was so into it.Wages are not great, circa £32k, not that bad at 19/20 + OT, pensions etc.

He finishes his course in a few weeks, so hopefully he can get something, have passed you Airbus suggestion on as I have with all the options people have kindly provided over the last few months.
He went down to Gosport for an Open Evening at Vector Aerospace, not sure where that is upto, he did a 500 mile round trip in a Citroen C1 for that, thats how keen he is !
Well, he has done the initial assessment for TC, went ok he said, so he will find out next week if he goes to the next stage where 18 of those who sat today will do some more tests and an interview, for seven positions.
Very competitive, really hope he gets an apprenticeship out of it, other than that he will be going to University to study Avionics but not sure whether that is just another three years with no actual industry experience, but you have to get a job to get experience.
He is a very capable lad, he got left in charge of the shop he works in for a week, I know its not fixing 747s but I dont think the owner would leave just anyone in charge, he acquitted himself perfectly, ran the place, I wouldnt let my other two loose on a Plane or managing a convenience store, they are more "creative", but him, definitely.
Anyway, sorry for boring you but seeing as I started this I though I should keep those who have show interest updated.

Studying at university is pretty useless on its own if you want to go into the maintenance side of the job.... It is more towards R&D/ design work.
Some university's offer B1/B2 module courses combined with a degree, they are ok but you NEED hands on experience to be taken seriously anywhere.
