Of course... NOTAM's read before flight. I was up at about 2000' on my flight. Sergey looks a bit lower from his photo, but I know he has a massive lens on his camera!
I think you are quite brave, the Americans do have some form.
Yeah but you haven't seen the size of Sergey's lens! Puts the fear of God into most who witness its majesty.

Err...Isn't it still the largest warship in the world?!?

I am very temped to go down on Saturday to have a look. They don't appear that often. I remember someone else posting details of the last Nimitz class to visit Portsmouth and that was a few years ago.

George HW Bush, around 7-8 years ago - I drove down there with 2 Nikons both of which had their batteries still charging at home!!

The crew will be gutted - they missed the opportunity to visit 'Joanna's' on Southsea sea front.
I remember being in Jo's (Royal Navy School of Dancing) on a Monday night when on a sea survival course back in 1999 playing drinking games with a load of Yank matelots off one of their boats (submarines for the uninitiated). They were rubbish drinkers. Still, I trapped a beast of a nurse, ended up in North End and had a hangover that would've killed a civvy the next morning. Those were the days. biggrin

I was based in Pompey a few years ago when another carrier was visiting. What happened then was that the ship's company bomb-bursted all over the UK to go sightseeing rather than staying local. In fairness, jumping on a train to head up to London or Edinburgh isn't really much of a journey for them when you consider the size of the US. Can't blame them really. Pompey is a hole.

It is an example of the largest warship in the world but you have to remember that the Solent also regularly sees the most enormous car carriers, oil tankers and container ships you can imagine. She was just expecting it to be bigger.

I was wondering why they didn't berth at Southampton, rather than leaving it anchored out in the Solent.

Nuclear powered and weapons maybe, the reactors won`t be shut down at anchor.

Because they'd prepare to leave on Friday only to find some Southampton scallywag has put it up on bricks and stolen the propeller.

Just wondering , the nuclear reactors on this can power it for 20 years all over the world without refuelling, which is incredible in itself, but just how much actual radioactive material would be needed in these reactors?

As long as they keep it away from Weston Shore, it should be okay

While the QEII terminal is probably big enough and deep enough I doubt ABP want trigger-happy Marine guards wandering about shooting people for looking non-caucasian, so better to stay out at anchor.

There's probably also a whole host of security implications with a ship that size going into a narrow channel that could make it an easy target.

had a drive down there yesterday and found myself at pebbles beach fish and chip shop.

firstly, i was surprised by the number of people down along the coast looking at her. hundreds, all along the beach right up to and around the headland.

the ship is further from the coast of gosport than from the IOW which makes it seem not that big but looking through a long lens you see the detail and realise what a monster she is.

there was no shortage of re-supplying going on and plenty of movement on deck - could have done with a 600mm lens but did ok.

i'll get some images up later.
