Paris to Newcastle plane gone off course apparently, escorted into Newcastle. According to Twitter that is. Didn't hear it in Wakefield.

Lots of reports on social media. Highly doubt they would go supersonic over Leeds at that time of night for a practice...

It wasnt a practice. An air France plane lost contact and diverted off course so 2 Typhoons were scrambled and eescorted in to Newcastle.

Well, I must admit, if the sound was indeed a sonic boom, then it was impressive. Day or night, you'd definitely hear it. Sounded like fireworks going off, in vey close proximity.

Heard it in outwood (Wakefield) must admit I'm proud of our military and love the fact they went from Lincoln to Newcastle and back at base after the mission in 45 mins!

Loved the sound

I listened to this playing out on 121.5 Mhz (the emergency channel), when you hear the words "On behalf of her majesties government I order you to turn right blah blah blah" ears tune in!

When asked why they (Air France) weren't in contact with ATC he bluffed some excuse out about not being contacted by ATC. Oops.

The tanker goes up in case it's a long job. The aircraft can refuel and keep tracking the threat. It's more likely to be of use for escorting Russian aircraft on the edge of our airspace.

Last night it was used by 1 jet whilst the other returned to base. Once that was ready to intercept again the other would have landed.

Credit: Paul Cummings photography.

A local photographer was out taking long exposure shots of the night sky and caught it being escorted.

With the shrinking airforce do we have a tanker on standby at brize a sort of slow qrf. Would they automatically respond as soon as the qrf deploy as we cannot have a tanker out on station.
