I'm new to flight tracking apps and have been using FlightRader24 recently. Living close to Farnborough I was hoping to see more exotica in and around the airfield. I noticed further up this thread that Air Force One was picked up on a tracker (albeit briefly) but, and apologies for the novice question, do non commercial flights not make it onto these apps? Of course I don't expect covert military missions to come up, but perhaps for an air show I thought they'd be more lenient?
Limited military on flightradar, I use ADS-B exchange but even that was not showing anything.

Go to global radar view, you can filter aircraft, just go into menu then options select the tab for filter then from the drop down box select military ,add, then tick the box to use filter then only military aircraft will show up.

Great link. I'll be keeping an eye on that now as well as FR24.

Flightradar24, planefinder, and ADS-B, used alongside each other show 90% of stuff including military, the odd little cessna sometimes doesn't show on any.

Another interesting one I recently found was Zello, to listen to radio communications without the need for a scanner.

Was down at Silverstone last week and popped on FR24 when the Red Arrows were performing however didn’t show on app. Any ideas why they’d be ‘offline’?

FR24 doesn't usually show fast jet.. ADS-B might do, but you seem to have to let it load, if at first it doesn't show on the map just leave it a little while and it might refresh.

I'm using this to track an A400 that flew over us a short while ago in Woolacombe. It's now showing a few miles off St Ives. Thanks for the link.

It didn't show up on FR or ADSB, but G-BVJT was circling for a couple of hours over the Camberley area this evening and a Police helo was also circling around the same time.

G-BVJT seems to have some history as a Met Police 'spy plane', so I think the two might have been linked and that something was going on which required some surveillance.

That's the one with the big trap door on the bottom of the fuse? I guess for photography etc. Does not appear to have too many antennas and domes etc, just the one big rack under the wings which is quite common on these twin engine aircraft just now they cover them up behind GRP to try and hide what it is.

That's the one. Yesterday it had a dirty great big stabilised camera pod poking out of it.

I suspect it has one or more array antennas, which don't look much but are very effective at pulling in low power signals from ground to air.

Found myself using this app a lot lately and I noticed something, hopefully somebody can give me an answer.

How come private jets fly above 40,000 feet yet normal commercial planes fly around 34,000?

Minimise wake turbulence?

So they have the place prominently to themselves, they can fly faster and at the extra altitude don't have to mix it with the common people in their big jets.

It’s not just the fast ones that fly at high altitudes, the baby citations do and they’re slow.

There are a quite a few commercial airliners up at FL390-430. The 787 can often be found at FL430 towards the end of a flight I.e. when light.

Flying higher means you use less fuel as they are more efficient at higher altitudes.

Business jets can go higher than commercial jets as their cabins are smaller and it’s easier to cope with the larger pressure differentials between the cabin and the outside,

You generally get as high as possible as soon as you burn off fuel and get lighter but sometimes there may be stronger tailwinds lower down or unusual temperatures that make flying lower better.

Also things like air traffic control may have restrictions that limit how high you can go.

Commercial passenger jets like B787 and A350s go up to around 43,000ft regularly but business jets are often higher and faster going up to 51,000ft

Thanks...........Could very well be yes............although not 100% sure about the 2 props rather than a jet engine as it was going away from me and I lost it behind some trees for a while....it was the sound that drew my attention to it.
