Hold on, do the cylinders oscillate as well as the pistons?
Its not what I was expecting
I thought the cylinders rotated all the way round as the pistons slid up and down inside them
I didnt know they were operated by an arm so moved longitudinally and rotated back and for
Thats not to say that they didnt - just that I didnt realise it had that extra complexity
Amazing
Great animation here of the same principle in the Bristol Hercules radial.....lots of gear cogs!!

It’s the sleeves that move within the cylinder block, and the pistons within the sleeves. There’s something slightly wrong with the timing of the animation I think - the gears don’t move at the same rate as the shafts.

It is the work of the devil. Imagine servicing that thing.

It looks complex all at once, but if you focus on one cylinder it's amazingly simple with (if I'm correct) fewer moving parts than a conventional OHV engine.

But yes I'm sure it would be a bugger to service.
