Its the one plane that will out-CAS an A-10 in my book
And as with the A10 but more so - only viable against an enemy who has nothing beyond rusty AKs to defend himself.
That's probably a bit harsh, but I'd agree the Spectre is very mission specific. However, like the A10, it's brilliant at the niche it was designed for.

I grew up (and still live) on the edge of Salisbury Plain, so it will always be the Herc for me. Up close and personal with the underside of ones out of Lyneham more times than I can remember.

The new AC130J Ghost rider was in last week Army times and they're supposed to be delivered shortly.

As an RNZAF kid, I grew up with Hercs. Flew on them many times when the clapped-out 727s scheduled for the regular shuttle flights inevitably broke down. However, as much as I adore the C130, the Bear just takes the cake - it really is the very definition of cool. smokin

Agreed, its a very niche airplane, but damn if it isnt terrifying if one of those buggers starts lighting you up shoot

Otherwise my vote probably goes to the Tu-95

Ermmm it's wasn't that niche in the first gulf war! In fact it even shot down a helicopter! I read a book (will get the title later) about he A10 and it's done a lot of roles (obviously more jack of all than master though).

Howitzer ?? .....na, been done before with an HV-88mm
Have you seen the size of the muzzle brake on that gun? It's nearly the same length as the barrel!

OK, hadn't realised that.smile But then I think any aircraft featuring a big fk off gun is going to be pretty formidable against the majority of things it engages.biggrin

The A10 isn't a particularly large plane though.
