The ARC is a must if doing an Atlantic circuit.
We are back in UK having crossed with ARC and returned 4 years later on our own.
Both crossings two handed. Had a ball in Caribbean, meeting ARC crews on most Islands

I think you'd hard pushed to spend either a weekend or 10k on a Sonata.

250k will get the OP a magnificent vessel. This site specializes in what the OP is looking for:

I could recommend a holiday with this lot as a thoroughly pleasant introduction to the sport:

The 54 foot steel gaff cutter Dyarchy II on that site it gorgeous. She would be my choice if I had that kind of money to spend on a boat.

That is a fine looking boat, definitely a mans boat.

For those who like to waste time looking at boats they can't afford then woodenships.co.uk usually has some real beauties.

I do like this and can also recommend Luke Powell's book to admirers of the wooden gaffer:

If my wife were to run off with a greek waiter and take the children with her then I'd have to buy this (I have reason to believe that it could be had for 30k):
http://www.woodenships.co.uk/sailing-yachts/59-ber...

And then live on it while doing this:
http://www.ibtc.co.uk/courses/full-time-courses/bo...

The power of dreams as Honda say.

Ha, I have been looking at that wooden ships site so much over the years that one boat I lusted after years ago - a gaff cutter called Chloe May - has sold twice in the time!

I need a Greek waiter for my wife too!

There is always this site too::

Gents if you post photos of your wives, I’m sure there will be some members willing to learn Greek for you......

Broached the idea of getting into sailing to my wife at the weekend. I was talking about this sort of adventure:

http://www.yachtingworld.com/practical-cruising/6-...

The reception was, shall we say, not exactly enthusiastic.

However, she does like the idea of this:

....I suppose it is a start.....

Baby steps...Sailing Holidays flotilla on that bene 38 is all you need. If that doesn't persuade her then nothing will.

Forget about taking her sailing in this country btw, that's more likely to harm your cause than help it.

Oops. We are going sailing this Friday (from marina in Suffolk). I suppose if that doesn't put her off then there is hope...

As someone who only sails in this country I can categorically say at times its horrible and other times awful and twice a year wonderful.
Had a day out in a Moody 346 recently which has very nice accommodation .
