One of them flew with Qantas for a few years.
Will they keep one when they are all retired?

+1

The only retro design BA have done before was a rather half hearted early BA scheme for the last 757. Would be great to see some BOAC or BEA schemes.

The BOAC livery is going on G-BYGC, a Super-J 747 (also know as 86J 747's), and those are used mostly on high business traffic US routes (JFK, ORD, SEA, BOS etc.,), and the remaining Middle East 747 routes.

Edited to add, the US departures (apart from JFK which run all through the day from around 8am to 8pm) are usually from around midday to around 5pm, as the aircraft run a return flight a few hours later to arrive back at LHR in the morning.

Wouldn't get past the noise limits these days. But might make the locals understand what real noise is! hehe

BA has been a bit reluctant in the past to do the "retro livery" thing. It's partly because BA itself has only had three basic schemes since its inception in 1974 (ignoring the "World Livery" fiasco of the late 1990s). I often feel they try to pretend that the earlier nationalised airlines of BOAC, BEA - and all the others (Imperial, Northeast, BKS, Cambrian etc) never existed.

On that score, Airfix has decided to reissue their very first Concorde model later this year.It originally came out in the mid 1960s. It will be a pretty basic kit but it always looked great in BOAC livery -

Air france had to speed limit the pepsi blue concorde....so I guess the BOAC scheme was not going to happen in reality.

The production versions would have looked even better though. One of the few aircraft where the production models are better looking than the prototype.

Me too.

I can remember going to Heathrow with my Dad, Uncle and cousin (uncle worked for BOAC) to see the first BOAC one arrive at LHR.

I watched a BA7474 abort it take-off this evening at LHR, a few seconds after going to full throttle, the throttles were cut and the spoilers deployed and she rolled to halt about a third of the way down the runway, and sat there for about 5 mins, before eventually slowly moving off down the runway at taxi pace and turning off the runway and stopping on the adjacent parallel taxi-way.

I really hope they do that, would be fab, and give the similar era Air Lingus and that lovely retro Lufthansa scheme a nice rival.
The Lufty retro A321 is rather lovely.

Why do you think they are tossers ? What is the purpose of an airline - to be a loss making flying museum ? Most other airlines exited the 747 years ago, painting one in a retro scheme for a while is about as sentimental as they can sanely be. rolleyes

Would be my guess as well.
With relatively few years left for the 747 they will be managing the fleet that way to reduce costs during the gradual fleet run down.

2 747's (Lufthansa and Qantas) at Johannesburg airport last Friday. Parked in close proximity were 3 A380's (BA, Air France and Emirates).
