Boeing 747 days are numbered
Discussion
Currently posting this from Cattle on G-BYGF on the way to LAX. We were originally booked on the later flight (which was an A380 I presume) but that was cancelled a couple of weeks ago and we were moved to the 10 35 flight, and its been great so far (still over Canada). You could tell the skipper is a big fan as well, welcoming us to the "Queen of the Skies" in London.
I might be a bit strange but I far prefer these to the A380's also doing the LAX route - OK the Airbus is quieter, but there is more room on the 747 to get up and walk around, ad for whatever reason I always feel fresher after 10 hours in a 747 than an A380, just because there's more space. The A380 also looks like a constipated hippo, which doesn't really help.
Add me as another who'll be sad to see these things move on, just get some decent noise cancelling headphones and they are great

G-CIVW (another BAW747) is about 50nm behind you too, going to SFO.
Doesn't shock me - I don't recall seeing anything down at the Long Haul gates of T5 other than 747's this morning, other than a 777 that was just taxiing in. Don't remember a single A380, presume they are all on the return leg at the moment?Speed 3 said:

Going to eCube.
Tossers.
Why do you think they are tossers ? What is the purpose of an airline - to be a loss making flying museum ? Most other airlines exited the 747 years ago, painting one in a retro scheme for a while is about as sentimental as they can sanely be. http://thebasource.com/aircraft/b747-400/g-bnlk/

I say that as someone who spends their free time at weekends preserving an old airliner.

Was on G-CIVB Tuesday, Denver to Heathrow. Was looking and feeling a bit old and worn truth be told.
I was on G-CIVA this morning and the business class cabin at least looked in really good shape. The seats looked like a slightly nicer updated version but I could have been imagining it, I was pretty tired. Generally it looked great for a 26 year old plane.https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6692953/T...
Excuse the Mail link, but a (rare for them) exciting article about the queen of the skies.
I'm nearly 30, and I have a very hazy, warm and precious memory of my late grandfather taking me to an indoor viewpoint at Heathrow (I believe there used to be one that has since closed?) when I was about 5 or 6, and watching a BA 747 power down the runway and take to the skies.
I still to this day have the battered, broken die cast model of one, along with a similar battered Concorde which I was bought on the day.
It wasn't until 2016 at the age of 26 I flew on one.... the main leg of a KLM flight from Heathrow via Amsterdam (and my first, brief few hours in that city) to Hong Kong, with my one if my best friends from school.....to meet our other best mate who lives there for an Asian adventure that after a week in HK took us across Thailand, it's islands, Cambodia, Vietnam, Macau and back to HK, all for the first time, in what became the trip of a lifetime.
City of Parimaribo it was called, that 747, and how fitting I could do that magical trip out to the Far East on one.
The glamour and the gamble behind it that Boeing took still makes my hair stand on end, and i always stop and look up when I see one overhead, and soak in the images it still conjures up for me..... of exotic far flung corners of the world and the abilities of man
Hope I get to fly on one again soon before they go.....

Most likely the Queens Building. Spent many an hour there as a plane spotter in the 1970'/80's, mostly outside and up the top of Car Park 3 after it closed. Always used to get a cold Star Bar from the shop - highlight of my day as I loved them.FFG

Get the coach to Gatwick for a day and back
A copper checked us out once,
Once he found we hadn’t run away, he got on the radio and told us what was coming in.
