What's the cheapest way to get a flight in a private jet?

out of intrest, what happens when you turn up at the airport vs using an airline? do you bypass the terminal ?
Probably slightly different depending on airport, but yes, you bypass the terminal. At departure you go to a separate, small building (or area) where your luggage is screened and passports checked.
On arrival - passport checked as you get to the bottom of the stairs off the plane, walk 10 steps to your chauffeur car and off you go.
Which brings us neatly full circle to:

I did a tour of France on a private jet for work once. Fun, but cramped.
I did another tour of Northern France on a helicopter. Very noisy, but they dropped me off at CDG for my return flight, and the VIP treatment you get there if you come in by helicopter included holding the plane for me, which was nice.

Find a flight in an Embraer 145, take a bottle of Champagne and a vivid imagination.
Funnily enough I flew in one of those from Cleveland to Toronto (I think) once. When it turned up at the gate I thought 'Cool, looks like an oversized private jet!'Sadly it stopped looking like an oversized private jet once we were aboard...

Have done the private jet experience a few (ie less than 10) times. Find the private jet experience overrated, prefer business or first class.
The before and after flight experience is brilliant though, not having to do the airport security/passport/luggage thing before and after is fantastic.
Make sure its a international flight so you make the most of the convenience.
I think that's the whole point isn't it? Convenience, rather than luxury. Firstly, you go through the passenger procedures before take off and after landing really fast; and secondly you can go where you want when you want, and have a greater selection of airports to choose from. I wouldn't expect a tiny plane to offer the same comfort and luxury as a huge jet like an A380.The before and after flight experience is brilliant though, not having to do the airport security/passport/luggage thing before and after is fantastic.

I've not flown in a private jet, but I have been in a privately operated prop plane on business and yes, the reason the company used it was that on an internal flight it saved a huge amount of time. For starters they could choose an airfield closer to work, but also at the end of my trip I got out of the plane and walked about 50 metres to the taxi that was arranged for me - I was in that cab about two minutes max after the plane's wheels touched the tarmac.

At those prices, business or first might be a better option, not least because you can choose to go somewhere you want to when you want to, rather than simply turning up and one airfield to fly to another just for the sake of it.
Guess I was hoping to hitch a ride on a Gulfstream to the South of France when it was on its way to collect its rightful owner for £500 or something.
Ah well, nice idea...
Its amazing how your expectations can be so far out of whack with reality.Guess I was hoping to hitch a ride on a Gulfstream to the South of France when it was on its way to collect its rightful owner for £500 or something.

Last year i was in Florida with 3 mates and I decided to enquire about renting a small plane (not a jet) from a local airfield to take us on a day trip somewhere.
The quote came back and it was eye wateringly expensive, it was more than the cost of our entire holiday!

I am not sure why you found this surprising, even a basic small private light aircraft is around £100 an hour to fly, that's without a pilot!
My only experience of using a privately owned aircraft was when my boss had one when i was working in the states in about 1990. He offered to take my girlfriend and I on a sightseeing flight provided I paid for the fuel. We flew around for maybe an hour or two and when he refilled the tank he handed me a receipt for $16!I've taken many biz flights over the years. No crowds, walking for ages to the gate and horrible airline food.
By best ever was with a famous F1 driver, his pilot and me between Sao Paulo to Santos Dumont, I feel like a star went I got out, people fawning over me until the man got out and they realised I was a no-one! My 30 seconds of fame.
