On many airlines premium economy is closer to the business price than the economy.

Myself, I just choose better airlines and better planes. It costs a little more, but not nearly as much as flying premium on a crappy airline. The United 767-300 I flew on yesterday didn't lack for space in economy, the COPA 737-800 was a little bit more squeezy but it helped having a whole row to myself. The irony was that it ended up being cheaper than BA/Iberia as they charge for luggage. Slightly more expensive than Avianca... but fk flying on a 787 again.

“On many airlines” is too close to Trump’s “many people are saying...” line for me. biggrin On BA, the price roughly doubles between economy / premium / business, so you’d have £350 / £700 / £1,400 each leg, say...

It’s not a hard and fast rule because it’s very date and demand driven, but it seems to broadly work out. Flight times used for business travel, and travel policies which now cap at premium, can see business class be cheaper than premium with premium being stupidly expensive... Depends on the bookings for a given flight.

Correct on BA at any rate the premium economy cabins tend to fill up. The chance of an upgrade with BA is highest from Premium Y to Club. What you also find is you can get very cheap upgrades from PremY to Club close in as they know they are heading into an upgrading situation.

I know of a couple who flew to St Lucia, a weeks holiday was £2600 plus another £2400 to upgrade to premium economy, now to me thats bloody madness, I just can’t see the doubling of the price of a holiday just to move slightly further up the plane.

Not when you have been to and fro to Oz a few times, that's nine hours, change plane and then another 14 frown

In the good old days it was a lot longer, taking in a refuelling stop in Gander, Newfoundland, mixing it with the Aeroflot IL-62s.

Not madness at all, it’s called choice yes

However you don’t want to spend the money, that’s your choice and I’m sure you spend some of your money in ways which might that couple probably wonder why do you do that!

When you're 6'5" very few economy seats are comfortable for 9 hours (I can do about 3 max).

We've used PE for our Caribbean / US flights, but only when offers available - last years Air NZ PE seats to LA were £10 more than Economy when we bought them in a sale.

It’s not really. I fly to Asia, Aus or NZ most months. They’re long haul.

A little 9 hour hop with only a 4 / 5 hour time change is a breeze.

For the vast majority of people, 9+ hours on a plane is not the norm. I’ve done it 3 times, all superb except the one return leg where we had to suffer in economy because we’d been stuck kn jamaica for 8 extra days due to a volcano and there was only one flight back.

I’d always pay extra for better seats for 9 hours.

Those flights are off the edge of the world sectors. St Lucia is merely long haul.cool

No its madness. I routinely pay business class when I go on holiday. it adds significantly to the cost. But 1200 quid each to fly PE over economy IS madness. The difference is marginal. Business is a quantum leap above PE & economy.

I would too but the above example of £2400 for a PE upgrade is madness. They were robbed blind.

My employers always put me in economy and I have never paid to upgrade, although I have been tempted to. Best I have ever had happen for free was an upgrade into premium economy, just the one time in 78 Atlantic crossings!

I was once tempted by a £600 upgrade to business class from Seattle back to the UK, but I resisted and was very pleased I did when we landed. I was a bit sore and tired but still had that £600 in my account... It's a pretty significant sum really, and I feel it goes a lot further on land that just over a few hours in the air.
