And there we have it, Challenger 3 contract signed, 148 fleet.

So, they aren't new tanks then, this is a refurbishment/upgrade of 148 of the existing Chally 2 fleet into a reduced fleet of Chally 3 spec.

Kind of ironic that its being done by Rheinmetall BAE Systems laugh
Same hull, new engine, new driver crewstation, new armour, new turret, new gun, new sights, new targeting equipment.

It's a significant upgrade, yes.
Are they going smooth bore at last?
Yes.

And it is to low a number imo
Yes, smoothbore 120mm shared with Germans.

I think the number of vehicles is fine, because I accept that it's more about maintaining an industry capability and crew capability than being able to launch a roaming tank battle on the east European plain.

The RTR was probably lucky it even got this many given the rumblings and rumours circulating.

If they can get 148 reliable tanks, that's better than 300 with terrible availability.

Anyone know how much is in common with the LEP? That was a Rheinmetall BAE turret wasn't it?

This is CR2 LEP, but it's a mashup of the BAE systems Dark Knight and RLS 120 Smooth Bore concepts and RBSL is now one entity.

Sad to see them disappear, even if 'Fin, Tank, On!' was a more useful Fire Control Order than 'Gee-up Dobbin!' even when I was serving.

There were also 15 regiments' worth of Chieftain/Challenger - more than 850 of the things.

Some of the light cav regiments went to Jackal for light recce didn't they? What's happening with Ajax for armoured recce?

QDG and SCOTS DG, I think, with the others on CVR(T). Not sure if the future is Ajax for all, Ajax + Jackal or Ajax for some and disbandment for others.

As a rule it's better if you can keep the outside world firmly on the outside, certainly.

HESH laughs at your arbitrary boundaries.

Poor loader, going to be a lot less busy, and a lot heavier lifting.

HESH travels so slowly you have time to get out of the way...with the 76mm on Scorpion it was quicker to send a runner with a hand grenade.

I presume the proposed CR3 turret puts ready rounds in the bustle, behind armoured doors and under blow-off panels, per Leo 2 and Abrams, which begs the more important question of where does the beer go without charge bins to put it in?
