Anyone been before?

Any tips on where to park etc?

Do they let you bring food in etc?

Anything worth knowing or seeing?

Thanks

When are you going?

I've been to every show since 1986 - and I also went to the 1978 show. There is on site parking but I would expect delays getting in and out. As I'm local, I travel by foot or bicycle.

There is an interesting line up of aircraft on the field at the moment. Don't forget, Farnborough is primarily a trade show so there are quite a few aircraft which some may consider a bit mundane i.e. light aircraft, executive twins, biz jets and airliners. There is less heavy metal than at (say) Fairford.

There will be some interesting historic planes on show, including the Red Bull team with their Douglas DC-6, P-38 Lightning, F4U Corsair and Alpha Jet.

I'm sure you can bring your own food. I have in the past. There is a fairly strict security check on entering - much like you get at airports these days.

I worked with a chap who was a Sikh. Farnborough Airshow security wouldn't let him bring his ceremonial dagger (kirpan) in, and as Sikhs are meant to carry these at all times, he ended up watching the show from the car park.

There are official car parks on-site. Are you planning not to use them?

I'm going on Thursday. We always park in the main carparks and then get the free busses in to the airfield. It's all very slick and very civilised, very little queuing in or out. Security is quite strict, never taken food or drink as our 'host' always provides plenty.

Some rubbish phone photos from yesterday. Not much military stuff took to the air.

What's this crop-duster turned Rambo crop-buster?

Did this used to be a Bombardier?

This A400M gave an energetic display.

The oil spill 727

The A350 waited to take off just as the A330 was coming into land

The Dreamliner was followed by a 737 Max.

Interesting. Judging by the folk standing in front of the warlike crop duster, I reckon it's Chinese.

The Airbus A220 is the former Bombardier C Series.

Airbus has taken over the project with effect from this month . It is part of a dodge to get around import restrictions put on Bombardier by the Trump administration.

No apparently it's American and based on the design of those crop dusters you used to see in American films. AT stands for Air Tractor !

Crop dusters tend to be of a fairly generic shape - because of the job they do. They need to be strong - which gives you braced wings. They need to have a deep fuselage - to house the hopper tank. And the pilot needs to have a lofty perch so he can see the ground ahead when low flying.

It is one of the few classes of aeroplane where a tail wheel is still the preferred undercarriage layout.

I’m going with my two young children. They are very excited but I doubt they will last the whole day. Is it better to arrive early - say for 9am - or leave it until a bit later?

Also is the parking secure and decent sized places? Wondering which car to take.

The main car park is in a huge playing field, loads of space, you can leave a big gap to the next car. It's very dusty. Shuttle buses direct to the airfield, about a 5 minute trip. All very easy.

Thanks very much that's really helpful - just what I wanted to hear!

If anyone has views on the best time to arrive with young kids, please let me know. I've noticed that the flying displays are in the afternoon but given my boys have never seen a plane up close before, I'm thinking they will also like looking around the ground displays.

I went today and have to say I was rather disappointed with the flying display and the rather low number of aircraft in the static park compared to some other years. (I've been to every Farnborough since 1986 plus the 1978 show).

The space hall was good and I had some interesting chats with people working on various space projects.
