Wellum exemplified for me what we as a nation should aspire to. Quiet, unassuming, but profoundly courageous.

First Light works because it is painfully honest.

On all of your recommendations just ordered a copy....

A true gentleman and an indisputable genuine hero, another sad loss.

Can only echo all of the above.

A great loss.

Saw the Spitfire Documentary film this week in which he features extensively, we just aren't capable of producing
heroes of his caliber these days.

Sqn Ldr Wellum, I salute you!

RIP

Then again we don't have Nazi Germany on our doorstep and the risk of being invaded/loved ones killed etc. I asked Eric Brown if he thought the youth of today could rise to such a challenge, and slightly to my surprise he said 'yes'. I hope so. There is simply no challenge, so they share photos of cats on social media instead.

Yes we are, as is often the case "cometh the hour, cometh the man", they were extraordinary times that gave rise to extraordinary actions from what at first were ordinary men.

I just finished reading ‘The Forgotten Highlander’.

I’ll be reading Geoffrey Wellum’s book next.

I was lucky to get to go round the BoB Memorial Flight hangar some years ago with the local TVR owners. Our group was shown around by the then OC Smithy. One of the first things he said was to recommend First Light as a must read book.

Any good? Thought I'd probably watch it when it gets released on download or whatever.

I watched it over the weekend, it was very interesting with some beautiful imagery. It was very poignant watching some of the interviews, now that some have passed away since the filming.

One particular sequence got me featuring a clipped wing Griffon Spit Climbing hard straight at the camera aircraft, looked awesome
In all a totally fitting tribute to the aircraft and the people who's lives it crossed

I will probably blub if I see a video of a Spitfire flying over his funeral. Well done Boy.

Something powered by a Merlin flew over my house yesterday, I couldn't scramble out of the door quickly enough and it was gone unseen. Ambush by Merlin is best.

Geoff's funeral today, and BBMF graciously flew one of their Spits down to RNAS Culdrose yesterday in preparation for a flypast at his funeral today, weather permitting.
