Norwegian Frigate in a collision

A Norwegian Frigate was ran aground last night to stop it sinking after colliding with an Oil tanker.... Serious stuff, it looks like it's trying to now capsize as the tide comes in...

By all accounts the warship didnt have its AIS on, and in the dark the tanker would almost have been blind to the danger.


Some very good work by the tugs to keep pushing the ship up the shoreline, and probably stopped it slipping under the waves. Looks a complicated and expensive job to refloat and get it returned to service though.

We can all speculate on what happened, some may be better informed than others and might get close to it. Me I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the investigation, which the preliminary results should be fairly quick, rather than second guess it.

Good call to beach it though and prevent a total loss though as I suspect it would be on the bottom by now.

On another level sad to see such damage to what was a relatively young warship, not going to be cheap to repair or replace. Certainly not going to polish out....

What was that RN ship that came home on a low loader?

IIRC that was repaired,and had similar damage

Both came home in low loaders.

Both ships survived because of great damage control.

My missus cousin is stationed aboard said ship, they've been told of serious repurcussions if they talk to any press.

Same cousin got us access and a mini tour around the Fridtjof Nansen whilst he served aboard that, very impressive and expensive machinery those ships.

Nearly, Nottingham hit a rock, Southampton cut in front of a tanker's bulbous bow and lost... Only the fact she stayed stuck on that bulb prevented her from sinking immediately. She also had a complication that the collision went across her main missile magazine damaging a few, but nothing untoward happened with them, thank fleck for SAU's.....

Nearly, Nottingham hit a rock, Southampton cut in front of a tanker's bulbous bow and lost... Only the fact she stayed stuck on that bulb prevented her from sinking immediately. She also had a complication that the collision went across her main missile magazine damaging a few, but nothing untoward happened with them, thank fleck for SAU's.....

Forgot completely about that one.

By the look of that damage this is also a 'bulbous bow' hit.
It staggers me how a vessel with that amount of high tech kit can miss seeing/detecting a huge oil tanker.
I can perhaps understand a commercial ship being put on autopilot while the watch go for a meal but a navel vessel with i'm guessing 4 or 5 on the bridge at any one time and still this sort of thing happens.

Yes Ive read a few of those. Tbh I'll wait for the prelim report though. The damage is stbd aft quarter, which is surprising.

It's not looking so good after a few days of bobbing. Issues with tether lines failing and being replaced and more failing has meant she's now settled on the bottom.

Is 'settled on the bottom' a naval euphemism for sunk, 'cus to my eyes that looks like it's sunk.
