Will this guy make it? 1700 miles in Searider
Discussion
fab to watch - summarises all that is British about boating - slightly bonkers, with enough planning to make it work!
I used to own a 4m Searider - fantastic boats, the hull is designed to let water in to stabilise the boat in rough seas, and then drain it out on the plane for speed - mine had a 40hp 2-stroke engine, and they were originally specced for 50hp 2 stroke. 2-stroke is lighter than 4-stroke, which might explain why they are only using 30hp - but 30 hp seems a little under-powered for what they are doing - I know that absolute power is not the answer, esp. when planning / navigation / etc. should be the main drive to safety, but there are times when the extra can be useful.
https://www.powerboatandrib.com/2012/02/17/avon-4m... is a good summary of the boat - the 4m Searider is the boat which was used to circumnavigate Scotland in the late 80s and which basically started the revolution in RIBs
miss that boat - not sure I would want to go around the UK in one, but it was a lot of fun on the Thames (at 4 knots of course...)

I’m presuming this is an amateur effort and all the footage is captured by Harry, his drone, and his friends.

When I saw he had made it to Falmouth I contacted him to offer our yard to re-launch for the next leg.Loved boat tour and the classic speedboats at the start.

His brother lugs the boat and crew about the country in his Discovery and its just Harry or whoever is on board filming, as low key as it gets - but great fun people to be around.
I did the facility / boat tour at the beginning and had a mic, but Harry just walked around holding a camera, that simple. Shows he's talented as he pulls together a compelling story despite having to work with rank amateurs like myself!

Hello, nice to close the loop and have you on the site and hear how the filming was for you.His brother lugs the boat and crew about the country in his Discovery and its just Harry or whoever is on board filming, as low key as it gets - but great fun people to be around.

As said, while it appears very relaxed an on-the fly (sounds like it was for you too) the end result is also of a great quality, which shows the mans talent. And while again on the surface he appears woefully under prepared/experienced in a boat not really up to spec for the job. Actually he has clearly done the background research, is in one of the most seaworthy 4m ribs going, with all the import kit needed, and makes it look effortless.
“Fast Electric” craft in a heart beat if funds allowed.

Thanks, the Elektra does look good and I’m certain electric boats will be more prevalent in time. We have a Hybrid 42’ in build but it seems our popular engine of choice is the silky smooth Yanmar 8LV.As said, while it appears very relaxed an on-the fly (sounds like it was for you too) the end result is also of a great quality, which shows the mans talent. Excellent, just the escape I needed at the moment It was obviously done at the end of summer, but I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next episode. I am still massively jealous of what Harry is doing, great series.

Grand Designs cross over episode!just been re-watching the videos - am still amazed when people take boats around our coast with seemingly very little knowledge - e.g. entering the firing range and asking how they were meant to know - well... it is on the map but still love what they are doing, and there is sufficient safety clearly in there, and they are choosing the weather carefully... fab, proper British type journey!

What I find crazy is you can go out tomorrow and buy a boat legally and enter that range without knowing (again legally) as there is no formal qualification required. I guess that’s why you have range safety vessels. The amount of times I’ve listened on CH16 with a warship announcing live firing and yet people still enter the range....I absolutely love this series, it pains me to have to wait so long in between videos, If this was on the BBC it would be a massive Sunday night hit, yet there it is, one man, a drone and a camera pushing out something of this quality. He is really talented and all his friends are very likeable, even the grumpy one with the lighthouse boat full of foam! The richness of the beauty and history of the coast he exposes, is something to treasure.
Some solid progress but if he is stopping over the winter again (having done the easy bit), and he's pretty much got to, he's going to be doing this for several years!
