Some are surviving in the southwest and Scotland I think running in a smaller configuration
Yes, some are now on the Aberdeen-Inverness route

And down here west of Bristol, still quite a common sight. The shorter pause between the power cars going by still sounds odd.

I don't understand why they're scrapping HSTs, they're infinitely superior to their replacements and could easily be cascaded to secondary routes. They'd be most welcome on the Reading-Guildford-Redhill-Gatwick run!
There’s a chance you will see them running up and down the east and west coast as 125mph parcel trains once converted and contracts sorted.
Seems unlikely, some likely structural integrity issues over cutting holes into the sides of MK3 coaches. It'd be nice though! They're also mostly rotten, and the overrun and expense of fitting sliding doors on the passenger MK3s doesn't bode well for a complex project like making them into freight vehicles!

Was the Azuma already derailed when the HST hit it? Or some coaches of the Azuma buckled and hit the dirt when the HST (which appears to be fully railed) impacted it?

Azuma driver was distracted by the TMS (on board computer system).
Is this now known?

The below suggests both trains where moving , the HST at 5mph the Azuma at 14mph, do we presume simple driver error?

Sad to see the HST sets and loco hauled in general slowly disappearing. They still give a nicer ride than the Pendos and other replacments, but they are now quite old and tired and I guess it is inevitable we will have all MU pasenger trains from now on.

Azuma hit the HST. Both travelling in the same direction, HST moving much slower.

Watch this space...

MTUs into 73s and GEs into 56s sounded mad 5 years ago.
