Propeller shafts are not new technology. Why can't they make one that works?
Making one work doesn’t seem to be the problem, two however…
OK I have it.

Make one that works.
Make another one that works.
Put them in the same ship.

Owzat? nuts

Or why not azipods? Handy for dodging torpedoes and bombs.

Shoulda been a naval architect!

She was already 24 hours behind schedule when she left yesterday due to a "tech fault" pushing the departure back a day.

Not robust/sturdy enough. That's why you'll not find them on any warship/fighting ship.

Slightly O/T but is it possible to ‘dodge’ a modern torpedo, don’t they have guidance systems to follow their target no matter how much it manoeuvres?

It has me trying to remember which one of the invincible class carriers had the dicky propshaft that meant running at full chat was a noisy affair.

Yep, Rear Admiral Steve Moorhouse released a video statement a bit earlier today suggesting as such would happen. It will be easier for divers and whatnot to carry out inspections if she's not bobbing about too much.

At least the stealth technology is working then.

Invincible however the design was two different length shafts, which caused issues

What was the issue? Plenty of designs have assymmetric shafting, T45 as an example.

Was one of them just badly aligned? No-one did a stern drop analysis before installing it?

Had a great tour around the Prince of Wales yesterday courtesy of the Commander.

I served on the old Ark Royal, Invincible and Illustrious so was interested in the sheer scale of the ship.
Really interesting photos - thanks.

I don't much about these large vessels, but am amazed at the scale of them. When I had my RIB years ago, I got as close as regulations allow to one of the vast American carriers at Portsmouth. Up close, from a RIB, the carriers look impossibly big!

she would corckscrew at high speed, almost felt as if shaft revolutions were off, badly aligned or twisted.

They weren't meant to be, but they got British Leyland workers from the Rover SDI production line to build them hehe

If that was the case, they wouldn't even have fitted the ship! biggrin
