Mopar offers 807hp Hellcrate V8 for $22k

America just got better - the V8 that powers the Challenger SRT Demon is now available as a crate

As if we weren’t already jealous enough of the US market’s plentiful supply of affordable high-performance vehicles, Mopar announced last week that the 807hp supercharged V8 of Dodge’s Challenger SRT Demon is now available as a crate engine for $21,807. That’s roughly £16.5k, which equates to a hell of a lot of bang for your buck for anyone after an engine to power their upgraded muscle car or project machine – or, indeed, anyone who wants a coffee table stand with more power than a McLaren Senna.

You may remember that the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 HEMI also powers the recently launched (and rear-wheel drive) Challenger SRT Super Stock, where 717lb ft of torque enables a quarter-mile sprint of 10.5 seconds. The crate motor is technically unchanged from the lump that Dodge fits to its muscle cars, with the ‘Hellcrate’ Redeye using a 2.7-litre supercharger and forged and lightened internals to enable 14.5 psi boost and 6,500rpm redline. It comes as a complete engine assembly, including the throttle body, fuel injectors and coil packs, as well as the water pump, front sump oil pan and flexplate.

That last part affirms that this motor is intended to be used with automatic transmissions, and Mopar – FCA’s parts division – said the setup is specifically aimed at customers with pre-1976 street and off-road vehicles. But so long as local road laws allow it, we can’t see anything to stop a buyer from fitting Dodge’s supercharged silly-motor to whatever they please. An 807hp V8 is likely to be an upgrade from pretty much any automotive starting point this side of hypercardom. Assuming you have an engine bay big enough to accommodate it.

Affirming the flexibility of the motor is Mopar’s offering of compatibility-enhancing parts, including a flywheel for manual gearboxes, and a whole front end accessory drive kit for cars lacking the hardware. It adds an alternator, power-steering pump and mounting pieces, as well as belts and pulleys to the package. Given the thickness of Mopar’s brochure, it seems your imagination (and bank balance) are the only limitations to a project’s potential. And should 807hp be too much, the FCA brand still offers its existing four crate motors, starting with a 375hp 5.7-litre baby. The options are endless; as is our jealousy.

Oh to be on the other side of ‘The Pond’
As someone who is t sufficiently technically-minded, will this run without all sorts of ecu’s or will it need plenty more $$$ thrown at it just to get it to fire up.
Only asking as a friend had a Sunbeam Tiger into which he threw some huge capacity Ford engine and other than engine mounts and cooling etc had it pretty much up and running over a weekend

I'd absolutely love to put that in a Rover 75 V8.

Gotta love the Americans, they’re definitely not letting the V8s die off any time soon!

800bhp that goes in a car with a warranty, how much would McLaren or Farrari change you for a replacement with as much power? Obviously they’ll want your VIN first though, no selling engines to go in anything else from the European makers.

Have always wanted to take an old beater, something that loooks like it should be a dodgy minicab, and shove one of these crate motors under the ‘hood’ so it can run 10s. The ultimate street sleeper. biggrin

One other thing not mentioned is reliability...

Drop something like this into your 'project' and it almost becomes viable as a reliable daily driver, with only periodic oil changes required. wink

If you buy the engine kit for around another $2k you get an ECU ready to go, wiring looms, accelerator pedal (digital), power control unit, and a bunch of sensors to fit (lambda, intake etc).

Basically engine plus fitting kit will drop straight into anything.

Ford are also offering their 5.2L supercharged engine from the new GT500 as a kit too - 700hp as well, but in a smaller, lighter package. Incredible times for those seeking more poke.

They're offering a Tremec unit in the MOPAR catalogue for $5250 which is rated for 700lb.ft, but in the US I'm sure there's enough drag racing shops to find something cheaper if you wanted. The power from these engines is pretty tame viewed from that side of things.

They're even selling a supercharged 426 hemi which gives you 1000hp and 950lb.ft.

With a modified engine cover, to let the supercharger stick out? biggrin

(From the pic, you’d probably need to dry sump it to get it low enough).

Everyone's who licking their lips at the idea of sticking one of these in an MX-5, Rover SD1, 75, 911 or a Sunbeam, remember this isn't an compact push-rod, all alloy LS. It's a massive iron block, DOHC Hemi with a massive blower on top. It's going to be very big and heavy and I don't think there's a shoe horn in the world that would cram one in the back of a 911 or front of an MX-5... but then, I'm sure someone will one day.

£16.5k plus shipping plus import duty plus 20% VAT.

I note GM have a 720hp big block for just under $16k or you can have a 505hp 7.0 LS7 for $11k or a 556hp 6.2 LSA for $13k.
