Tested but not adopted by the RAF.
IIRC the RAF only tested the castrated Lighting. The USAAF's version was much better.UK requested P-38 to have commonality with existing P-40 fleet, so that meant un-turbosupercharged Allison engines, and both engines to be right hand turning engines as per P-40, whereas P-38 had been designed to have counter-roatating engines.......
It was no wonder it was thus a bit of a dog.
USAAF still had the problems with the tail flutter well into early service, and being restricted from diving, which the Germans soon discovered and the problems with lack of cockpit heating meant it was never exactly suited to ops in the ETO.
In the PTO though, it excelled of course, and proved to be excellent in that theatre of ops, with all the top PTO aces flying the P-38, as well as being the only thing that could undertake the famous Yamamoto intercept.
