It's lucky the following ship that the picture was taken from managed to stop! It looks pretty close in terms of how long these things take to come to a stand still.

s it tidal?
Yes, all at sea level, no locks.
But the variation in tide height is small, could be not more than 30cm at this time of year, and not enough to make a difference to floating that monster off. Differences between north end and south end also vary during the seasons as well. Its already been stuck there though a couple of what ever high and low tide points already.

Someone on 'Today' this morning said that as each end is supporting the weight of the entire ship and cargo, it is possible that it will 'sag in the middle'. In that event a bypass might be a good idea!
And this is why you shouldn't list to anyone on the TV or radio! Literally 1 second looking at the picture and the water line relative to the plimsol line shows one this is clearly not the case!
He didn't say it was sagging, just that it might, presumably over time. Anyway, I am the messenger not the Oracle!
Possibly a bit of misunderstanding over what's meant there.

Ships hog and sag all day long out in the water, but as the hull girders are so stiff, you won't see much deflection.

But that doesn't mean that the bending moment the hull girder is seeing isn't massive, and that the resulting compressive stresses at your extreme fibres aren't large enough to result in buckling failures at your strength deck.

I wouldn't worry too much, the Egyptians built the pyramids with little more than hand tools, they'll have it refloated by teatime.

Looking at the cross section of the canal it's a lot shallower at the edges than I thought it would be.

Will be fun getting it unstuck.

Looks like a rising tide.

There is talk of it effecting the supply of goods and maybe fuel to us pretty quickly. It was loaded up with tat from China bound for Europe so that won't get here, along with all the other ships it's holding up.

Can they not just get a Citroen Aircross shipped over and pull it free?

I don’t know. I think they’d be more worried about the US Pacific fleet than anything the Europeans could muster.

I liked a suggestion on Twitter that they should get land vehicles to pull it back and forth to release it laugh
The UK has already deployed a battalion of 4x4 volunteers.

Elon is already preparing an offensive tweet about their sexual preferences.

Overzealous modding, no? This should be in NP&E, surely?

ETA: freed already? Wasn't expecting that!

It's been "partially refloated" and is now apparently alongside the canal bank.

Not according to vesselfinder, it definitely shows Ever Given as "lateral"

Damn it all, stop telling everyone. I'm busy panic buying Shimano bike parts right now, so that I can weather any shortages and keep my bike on the road...

Zoom out on ship tracker ( https://www.vesselfinder.com/?imo=9811000 ), dam that is a big queue already and one captain on bbc news said it will take numerous days to fix minimum. He was also saying that there is so much pressure on the captain by the company and most are 3 month on and 3 months off but most are doing 6 months on, so much stress on long stretch he is not surprised it has occurred.

Same as the road haulage business then.

In our house it's the explanation why there is a poop in the toilet despite my 12 year old's vigerous defence that he DID flush the toilet!
