^ This.

Standard on pretty much all the ships I have been on is that some machinery (pumps and stuff) is shut down whenever the engine is not going to be running for a while, and the engineers normally want around 1 hour to get everything ready, start extra generator(s), go through checklists and top up the tea & biscuit levels.
If you are likely to be wanting the engine more quickly then some things can be left running, but even then it still takes some time - especially in the middle of the night (which it always seems to be) as you will need to wake people up first!

To actually get going they will need to heave up the anchor, and how long that takes depends on how much chain they have used. Standard time is around 3 mins/shackle (27.5m). So you are probably looking ar around 15 minutes to get moving after the engine is ready - so around 75 minutes total.
Of course they might do things differently in Evergreen and therefore need longer/shorter than that, or might have more or less anchor chain out, but pretty sure there won't be a key involved!
Moving forward will probably just mean starting the engine. On most of these types of ships the propellor is basically linked directly to the engine, so as soon as the engine turns so does the propellor - no gearboxes or clutches to worry about.
Reverse is stop engine, fiddle about a bit with valves and injection type stuff and run the engine in reverse?

Yep, except the fiddling with valves etc is all done automatically. I just pull the lever and (all being well) the engine starts in reverse.

Understand she has full crew onboard and the Capt has not changed. They will be doing their daily maintenance no doubt

Wonder if they have had to bunker while waiting in Bitter lakes? Also can their FW generator produce water whilest in lakes or due to sediment they have had to order barges in.

Also would be interesting to know how hull will be effected after 3 months at anchorage. Could have some marine growth that will need cleaning and super polish prop.
Doubtful on bunkers, generators don't burn much relative to the ME. Evaporator won't work unless the main engine is going and isn't used unless in clean water and a decent way offshore, the bitter lakes are well manky. They may well have growth but it will be weirdo brackish growth that will die and fall off in seawater.

Scratching my head as to why this isn't proceeding ASAP to destination? Re-supply delayed until open water? Maintenance checks?

THE Ever Given is leaving the Suez Canal, its owner Shoei Kisen Kaisha has confirmed.
The 20,000 teu boxship (IMO: 9811000) which blocked the canal in March is underway toward
northern Europe at about 9.5 knots.

“Shoei Kisen Kaisha are pleased to confirm that, following the conclusion of a formal agreement
with the Suez Canal Authority, the vessel and her crew have departed the Great Bitter Lake in the
Suez Canal,” the company said in an emailed statement.

“Ever Given will proceed to Port Said, Egypt where a dive survey of the vessel will be completed. Subject
to approval from the vessel’s classification society, the American Bureau of Shipping, Ever Given will
then complete her voyage to the next port where her cargo will be discharged.”

The ship has sat anchored in the Great Bitter Lake, at the canal’s midway point, since it was
freed from the sandbank on March 29, amid a legal row between its owners, insurers and the
Suez Canal Authority over compensation for the salvage effort.

  • * A deal agreed this week was formally signed at a ceremony on July 7 at the SCA’s Ismailia
headquarters. No details of the final settlement were given. ***

irked bet the SCA are loving every second of this.... Im sure once the ship is out of there the mud slinging will start to fly.

Shoei Kisen Kaisha thanked the Ever Given’s master, officers, and its crew: “Your hard work and
professionalism exemplifies the very best of those who serve at sea.”

The Japanese company said the crew’s families had also faced the uncertainty of not knowing when their
loved ones would return home.

also thanked the SCA, saying its relationship with the authority had been “maintained and even
strengthened through this experience”.

It added: “We recognise the tremendous importance of the goods carried by our vessels and we regret the
impact that the voyage delay has had on those with cargo stuck on board, but we can assure all cargo
interests that throughout this matter every effort has been made to minimise the delay and to secure
the release of the vessel as quickly as possible.

“We are looking forward to the vessel returning to operations in due course.”

Insurer the UK P&I Club thanked “the many parties who have worked tirelessly to bring about today’s
outcome”.

The club thanked its lawyers and advisers for their work to defend the owners’ interests, as well as the
International Chamber of Shipping, “whose network of international connections provided invaluable
support in the negotiation process”.

It said Ever Given’s crew had worked closely with the SCA, salvors, investigators, lawyers, and
countless others in addition to their routine duties, “and throughout it all have consistently
displayed a patient professionalism that is truly admirable”.

Technical manager Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement also thanked the master and crew
for “their resilience and professionalism”.

Evergreen, the vessel’s charterer and whose customers’ cargo is onboard the long-delayed ship,
said only that it had been notified that an agreement had been signed settle the compensation and to lift
the ship’s arrest.

million seafarers across the world. There are many lessons to be learned from the in-depth inquiry still
underway, but we are pleased to see the Ever Given sailing again.”

The owners and insurers had reached an agreement in principle last month.
The SCA had lodged an initial demand for more than $900m in compensation, including $300m for a
“salvage bonus” and a further $300m for “loss of reputation”.

That was later cut to around $600m, and has also indicated that it would allow Ever Given to proceed
on payment of security in the order of $200m.

hehe

Just think, if the SCS had thown a strop or fancied some free cash they could have impounded HMS Queen Elizabeth... or shall we say held her hostage for £100Bn...

I sincerely hope she'd have shot her way out.

Sorry I meant SCC. SCS is a furniture company, and the worst they could do is get a sofa stuck sideways in a door.
