I never remember to look at the tiny screen above the seat to see if it's reserved, i'm normally too pleased to have found an empty seat I just jump in it. Then I realise I haven't checked and often have to do the 'standing up of shame' to check. If so what do you do? "Oy you are in my seat, move?"
Occasionally the screens aren't working and then it's a gamble if your sat in someones seat.
When it used to be the paper ticket stuck into the top of each reserved seat it was much more obvious. But then I used to choose the seat I want, and move the reserved ticket onto another seat.
Got two more visits to 'that there London' scheduled with tickets booked with East Midlands Railways, so I'm interested id seeing how the overcrowded situation is.
By the way, if anyone wants to know when the trains are next striking, it will be on those two days i'm going to London!!!

I've given up using the train. Thankfully don't need to use for work.

Train down to Newcastle from Dundee for our 52nd wedding anniversary. Used a travel agent and thought will try first class to see if it was worth it. Someone in our reserved seats, politely asked them to move, no problem so far good
Azuma LNER train on the Sunday, pretty busy but comfortable, different menu at weekend no bacon rolls but the pastrami sandwich was excellent, moist and tasted good. Plenty to drink both soft, hot and alcoholic, white Rioja was OK. Does it travel well I asked the wine waiter? He joined in with a witty answer.
Arrived on time too, so pleased.
Return journey even better, not busy six people in first, piping hot tasty roll rammed with bacon, excellent.
Coffee etc and soft drinks but no alcohol as it was too early for lunch menu. Arrived 30 minutes late because of the bad weather in borders but spent waiting time for Dundee train in first class lounge so no problem.
Seats on azuma OK for two three hours but don’t know if they are worn out or always been like that think more than three hours they would get uncomfortable.
Would I use first class again? Probably, we got a cheap deal and got value for what we paid but if they were too expensive would probably travel cattle class.
Good programme on ch 5 tonight comparing flying with train travel, worth a look on catchup, bit unfortunate one of the presenters trains was cancelled so not exactly a fair comparison. Think it depends on how far you are from station and airport at both ends. At least no two hours before nonsense and disrobing before getting on flight. Time the train companies were sorting out their prices you need a phd in maths to work out the best price.

The overcrowding to my mind is a specific cross country problem. LNER first class is generally good but the Azuma seating is terrible across the board. The still have older 225 operating south of Leeds and I’ll deliberately aim for one of those if I think I might be able to grab an upgrade..
Azuma’s AC always seems to be too hot also.

Did you keep your tickets, or can otherwise evidence travel on that train? If so have a go at claiming delay repay. The return leg was cancelled at Newcastle as all lines South were blocked, meaning I had to spend the night in Newcastle. Ticket refunded, but not the hotel cost.
The second trip to Aberdeen was onboard an LNER Azuma, badly delayed and then ultimately cancelled at Edinburgh. I had to wait at Edinburgh for an hour and eventually got to Aberdeen 3 hours later than I should have, at about 0010. Ticket refunded, but that didn't help getting up for work the next day.
I'll be doing the return leg on the 2nd May, I'm already dreading it.

Thanks for the thought but I can’t be ar$ed, retired so not in a hurry, quite relaxing in first class lounge so not really inconvenienced. Just finished dispute with KLM regarding getting to gate and being refused entry because the stupid computer shows £30 outstanding, I bought holiday through a travel agent, unbelievably bad service from KLM with their staff unable to read, understand and follow my complaint.Took six months to get my money back, worse service than Ryanair.

I upgraded to first class recently on my return train from Londinium to Sheffield. Enjoyable enough, though the coach was almost full. The trolley came down the coach with sandwiches, drinks, snacks etc. Then later on it came down again so I grabbed more.
The only problem was that I couldn't be arsed to leave my seat to inspect the cattle class coaches to see if they were overcrowded, which I really ought to have done as that could have provided even more satisfaction

I have just changed jobs and one of the main factors for changing has been the state of GWR between Bristol and London which I have been doing twice a week. The service is just completely in the bin, cancelled trains, power line faults, lack of drivers, nearly every train I get is delayed or has half the capacity it should have. And now, if I don't book 7 weeks in advance its £135 return, for an 80 mile 1 hour 15 minute journey.
